Barnsley Sport In BriefReid's Premier mission BARNSLEY captain Paul Reid has his sights set on a bigger prize than the Championship - a move up to the Premiership. The 24-year-old believes that the top flight of English football is an achievable goal for him. "I want to play at as high a standard as I can and I definitely haven't given up hope of playing in the Premiership," says the former Northampton, Rangers and Carlisle man. "Once that belief leaves a player, it's very sad. You should never accept what level you are at. I've still a long time left, barring injury, and there's still a lot I want to achieve." The big-game experience of playing for Rangers had prepared him well for his day out at the Millennium Stadium where he produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Play-off Final win over Swansea. "It took a while to get used to how big a club Rangers was" he says. "The passion of the fans and the Old firm rivalry will live with me forever. Even in Old Firm reserve games, there were thousands there and the rivalry was so intense." That sort of experience meant that Reid was ready to lead the Tykes to one of the biggest ever victories . "There was such a mixture of nerves and expectation going into the game," he recalled. "But we knew we had no divine right to be promoted. We know we're a club which can sustain a position in the Championship but we had to earn it. "To lead the lads out every week is a big enough honour but to do it at the Millennium Stadium in front of 60,000 fans, including all your family and friends , was just beyond description." With Reid recently signing a new two-year contract at Oakwell it seems that the settled skipper may be leading the Reds out for a while yet. "Playing at Cardiff for Barnsley was one of the proudest moments of my career," he said. "It's so hard to win medals in the professional game. That's why I intend to enjoy every minute with Barnsley."
