In the 70's we were always finishing around the bottom of the old 4th division,we had no money and no decent players, around 1977 the board thought **** it lets go for bust and they appointed Allan Clarke he spent money we didnt have and attracted players who normally would have told us to do one.
What I am getting at is you have to speculate to accumalate, Gorden and Patrick get out there and splash some cash.
Tell me to shut up if I am talking dribble, but its starting to hurt now.

Weres the cash gone from the play off final, Jacob Burns (thats if we did get anything) cash from Flinders and also one that no one seems to mention, cash from the wages that we have saved by letting players go and not replacding them.
C'mon Gord stop treating us like idiots.

I thought... That we had made £120k from the sale of Gorry to Newcastle and Otulakowski to West Ham and were able to bring in Clarke on the money. When the gates picked up, we were able to afford the first modest signings such as Bell from Halifax and Graham from Villa. By the season-end, we were promoted and the fan-base meant a much higher level of income was guaranteed, hence the arrivals of Glavin, Pierce, Flavell and later Downes, Aylott, Cooper etc. I am right? The message is basically the same - sometimes to need to speculate to accumulate. The only parallel now would be to sell someone for a considerable fee and bring in a couple of decent players with the money. Is this likely? The circumstances are not quite the same. I think Ritchie has been trying to do the right thing in bringing in new players on loan. From the sound of the post-match talk, there could be changes. Just hope that the bottom is not about to fall out of the season, though. Needs to be handled with care. Team building is a delicate art.
RE: paying off the huge debts we are in? where have they come from and what is the nature of repayment?
RE: paying off the huge debts we are in? Didnt Gord say we would be debt free by the end of this season?
RE: paying off the huge debts we are in? I'm not sure. The projection was that by this time we would be breaking even. This was contradicted recently at the supporters trust and no clarification has been made
RE: I thought... are you right? I dont know but you have convinced me with that memory recall it may be too late now, as has been discussed earlier, bringing loan signings in would probably been easier when we first got to 11 points (and that feels like years ago now). Losing becomes habit forming and comfortable, it becomes somebody elses fault, would a loan signing want to come and be put on a pedestal only to be the latest aunt sally I felt that the solution has to come from within but when I think who can come in Im not too optimistic

Mr. Micawber, in Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, summed it up by saying: Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery. And he was, of course, stating the bleedin' obvious. But even if it is obvious, it's amazing how many people fail to do anything about it. As Micawber said -- the result will be misery. Hopefully we ARE trying to do something about it, only it cant be donr overnight.. As I am into sayings rome wasnt built in a day
RE: paying off the huge debts we are in? we lost £400 K last year. I think we should be in profit this year.
To all the speculate to accumalate fans :- Last week at Wednesday 28 thou att. This week at Sunderland 27 thou att. Mid week at Oakwell 9 thou att. If we speculate and spend money we aint got and get a few good results what will our attendances be then? no more than 12 thou I bet. An increase of 3 thou at £20 a time = £60,000 every fortnight not a very good return to pay players who want circa £7,000 a week plus owt we have to pay to get them. Not trying to be negative but we have to live within our means otherwise its admin time again and I for one dunt want that again, been going to oakwell for 50 years and want to keep on going.
Well I reckon we are at least 25 grand a week better off this year..there or therabouts agreeing with you.
say 4 decent players on 4k a week = 16k and 8k to for pay rises for the players we wish to retain.
Simplistic..perhaps, perhaps it is a simple matter.

I think you are wrong Firstly we had already improved from bouncing along the bottom - we were a decent 4th division side before Clarke, but he acheived a few big things 1. The gates almost doubled overnight 2. He signed some decent players at reasonable prices to give us the push to get out of Div4 Now comes the key bit though - when we got promoted to Div 3 he rebuilt the side with some new players - 2 signings I particularly remember over the summer R.Glavin (at a very low price) and S Cooper - over the following months he added a few others gradually improving - but I dont think ever spending outside the clubs means. Unfortunately due to the stupid transfer window system, thats a bit more difficult these days. The difference this time is we havent signed the 2 or 3 players that would have made the big difference. I really dont know why not.
