With Mattis and christensen both being shown the door for nothing that racks up £400k of Daveys early attempts in the transfer market just wasted on players that probably didnt manage 10 full games between them!!!! If we allow Mostto to leave or take a knock down price for him that figure could double. I just hope that he has learned some valuable lessons, dont get me wrong he's also had some success with the likes of Foster, Sousa, Muller and Anderson. But the afore mentioned 3 have still cost the club a sizable chuck of money, if you take into account wages etc probably the same as Hume's tranfer fee.....
True, but..... ....how many players did the greatest manager we've ever had, Mr D Wilson sign who were not exactly great successes? Regis Krizan Marksted Tinkler (imo, although I know some rated him) Hristov Ten Heuvel Van Der Velden Their combined transfer fees must come to well over the 400k mark!
But it's only his second full season as a manager. And like others have said, Danny signed some ****! As has Sir Alex, so even the best make mistakes

If you went through all the transfers made by every manager I wouldnt think Daveys success/failiure rate would be much different to any others.
RE: Some people rated Tinkler? Tinkler is in my top 3 most hated BFC players of all time, along with Mike Sheron and Paul Gibbs. Oh, and Mitch Ward. And Kevin Donovan.
Robbie Van Der Laan? Really? In the 99-00 season his contribution was pretty huge, especially the first 10 games.
11-10-1998 We're 2-0 down at home to Port Vale and we're absolutely gash. Vat of Lard is having a stinker as per usual, but instead of getting his head down and putting in a shift he's too busy laughing, smiling and waving at the Vale fans. The useless bag of ******* *****.
"I see Barnsley as a stepping stone to greater things...." except he had absolutely no ability to back up such lofty ambitions. Total ***** who stole a living off BFC as far as I'm concerned.
Alas there are few certainties in the transfer market... ... Lessons may be learnt but they won't be worth too much.
Hristov... ... would have been a shoo in at the 'well these days. Proper finisher, didn't get too much of a chance really.
Tinkler..............turning circle of an estuary dredger....plus..... second touch was always a miscontrolled lunge-useless-oh and wasn't it funny how his "bad back" always recovered in time for international games!
Agreed Hristov could hit it first time and never wanted to take the extra touch like Hendrie, Liddell and Co did. That was the biggest difference I noticed between our strikers and the opposition strikers in the Premier season. I never understood why Wilson persevered with Liddell for so long and left Hristov on the bench. I actually thought Markstedt wasn't too bad.
I find it difficult to criticise him on his transfers. Up until this summer he had a small transfer budget, and a whole squad to replace. He had to buy in numbers and the law of averages says that some of them wouldn't work out. Even if Mostto goes for nothing though then that means 800k wasted on the players you mentioned. BUT, the other players you mentioned plus JCR have all increased in value by much, much more than we paid for them. The value of the squad now compared to last summer has increased 10 fold. The signings he makes this summer are the ones to be judged on.
