The club are handing out around 2000 tickets in the North stand to local schools today.

It's great, but it happens all the time and they've never stopped offering tickets to schools. The problem was always getting adults to take them.

It's difficult. Teachers have spent all week with the kids, they're not desperate to be looking after them on Saturday too, particularly if they're not interested in football. Then there's the travel expenses, hiring a coach to take all the kids to the game. Some parents would be up for it (most would expect the teachers to d it), but then they've go to be CRB checked before they can accompany children, which is a pain in the arse if nothing else. They too would have the problem of travel expenses because you can't just take the kids in your car without altering your insurance (and possibly even your licence, I'm not sure). Well, you could, but if you had an accident the insurance company wouldn't touch you.

It sounds like a great idea and it's a good gesture from the club, but the practicalities of it in this world of red tape are very restrictive.

Its a step in the right direction but its the 13 to 15 year olds they should be targeting the ones that ill be working and paying their own way in a few years.

    What about local football clubs?

Dearne & District have 17 teams from age groups Under 6 to Under 15. That's about 250 kids in a great catchment area.

What about handing out the remaining 12000 to people on the streets of Barnsley?
    Nothing to lose, is there?

I'm a season ticket holder and I wouldn't. I'd be all for it.

I feel that you'd be in the minority from past responses from ST holders, they went mental at the one off games we did for a five...

There's 10,000 empty seats every game, i think the lot should be handed out free to school kids, local football teams, competition winners etc l know kids need the teachers with them, teams need their coaches with them but we should be seeing what else we can do to make better use of these empty seats. I've never worked in marketing in my life so l'm stumped, l'll leave it to Ben and see what he comes up with.

I'm a coach at Dearne & District, also a season ticket holder. I know for a fact in the age groups u7-u10 I could get quite a few parents to help with bringing the kids.
We've done it for England U21 at Bramall Lane and a couple of games at Doncaster.

The way I see it, is that a season ticket should offer substantial savings compared to paying on the gate. The money is paid up front, the club can then work out a budget, so I think it's only fair.

My season season ticket cost £325. If you paid on the gate every game at £23 a pop, it would cost £529 for our 23 home games. So I save £204 over a season. That's more than a substantial saving as far as I'm concerned, it's an amazing saving. I'd be happy enough to save £100, but lets say the majority of season ticket holders would be happy saving £150 (that's 6 and a half games for nowt).

That gives us £54 to play about with for promotions.

One game Free admission, so take £23 off what a season ticket holder has saved and we're left with £31 for promotions.

One game at £10 admission. Take £13 off what a season ticket holder saves and we're left with £18 for promotions.

Two games at £14 admission. That's your promotion money used up.

Four games spread out over the season where the attendance would increase significantly (the free game would be a full house), but the season ticket holder is still saving £150 over the season. The club make next to **** all on pay on the day supporters as the majority attending are season ticket holders. They could afford to take a little hit four times in a season. There'll probably be enough extra people going to the £10 and £14 games to make the same amount as you would if you charged full price, you might even make more.

If the team play ***** and we lose in these four games then no one is going to come back for the next game. The promotion would have been pointless, you'll not get anything out of it, but you won't have lost anything either. Or hardly anything. If the team play really well and win, you will get some people coming back. Not everyone, not even half of them, but you might get a couple of hundred coming back to the next game. That's how you build up your support and that's how you make more money. It's dependant on the team playing well, but it's also dependant on the club offering incentives but keeping the regular patrons sweet.

I usually don't have a strong opinion on promotions as they don't seem to work too well but if we were ever to do the 'Footy For A Fiver' thing again we may aswell do it against a team that is going to see a big increase in normal attendances.

For example, if we were to do £5 a ticket against Leeds at home, I'm sure there would be many more people than usual. I'd only give Leeds 4,000 tickets though. Safety reasons.

I think for £5 against a local rival Oakwell would have a LOT more people in. The only problem then is cost of extra stewards/policing (which I couldn't even hazard a guess at) and weather this would be offset with thousands more people coming through the gate.

If you match what you usually would make with an 11,000 crowd then you've lost nothing while hopefully enticing more fans to come to the next game.

Only works if the club don't lose money though. If not then it's not financially smart.

I went to the Bradford v Notts match on Tuesday with 40 kids from our school. We got around travel expenses by charging the kids £2.50 for the coach (coaches are ricidulous prices). The parents were happy to pay that as it is still a bargain, I'm just suprised they let them stay out that late on a school night. We took 10 adults with us. I got back home at 11pm after arriving at school at 8am that morning. I've also had meeting Monday, yesterday, today and have to stay until half 6 for the Christmas Fair on Friday. I then have to stay until 8pm the week after next for our Christmas Concert. When I say have to, it is voluntary (sort of, if you don't mind letting everyone down and being the only one not to help). Sorry, that turned into a bit of a pity me post.
