...................not one!!! Well not one that I know of anyway

If yer want a night out with loud music loads of lasses and people supping out of bottles then the TARN is great
But if yer want a boozer with a good atmosphere good decor and good beer..........forget about the TARN in fact forget about the TARN district

All we have got is shoddy boozers and working mens clubs with misrable landlords selling nowt but John Smiths or Sam Smiths bitter and Fosters lager

Can someone point out a pub in the Barnsley district that is similar to say the George and Dragon at Wentworth.
I mean if you go to other surrounding towns they all have boozers like this

I know that Grimmy is not the answer to the question

..........you may have not fully understood what I was trying to say here

In fact Grimmy is at the other end of the scale to what I was trying to describe

You could give Silkstone Inn a try - the new Wetherspoon's on Market St.

But I agree with your point, there's no variety in town, I blame the council.

    RE: Simple

I heard about the 'Stute.....been to a few 18 and 21st parties there in my youth.

I remember when people in White City area wanted a pub for years because nearest were the clubs or top boozer, then in the late '70's they got the Red Rum - now that's the only pub in a village of that size - amazing.
Top boozer used to be heaving

Mind you though, the Clarkes family have run 3 boozers you say that have all closed......seems to be a link there!

I guess it's safe to assume that by "decent boozer" ....

...you mean one that meets your exact personal criteria? Some people like loud music and drinking from bottles, others like thick carpets and a guest ale. It's impossible for one venue to appeal to all and they're all businesses that are struggling to survive in a shrinking market. They cater for those who come through the door regularly and spend money, they can't afford to set up your ideal boozer and wait for you to have a night out. They don't develop according to a design or a set of ideals, they develop according to demand. It's nobody's fault if your demands are different to those spending the most money and keeping the boozers open.

There's plenty of variety in Barnsley and it's nothing to do with the council.

If you mean there's no variety in the town centre at weekends then that goes for most other towns as that's when they have to makea huge portion of their wet sales.

    agreed...

why the hell is it the councils fault that there a re lots of chain pubs in town centre...they grant licences to sell alcohol thats all....they cant turn it down because it doesnt sell real ale...

as windy says the pubs in town centre appeal to the weekend crowd....they make more money on a saturday than they do all week....do you expect blah blah to turn itself into a real ale pub...yeah can just see the creditors going for that....

the pub industry is on its arse for a number of reasons.......supermarket beer promotions......the smoking ban.....and the credit crunch....and the greedy breweries....why the hell would I want to sit in an empty pub midweek paying £2.50 a pint when I can do the same at home for a quarter of the price...sad but true...

    "***** Hunt"

Idea for a daytime TV show hosted by David Dickinson. Possible "Antique ***** Hunt", where the show comes live from Chicago Rock, Barnsley.

But numerous times I've seen in the Chronicle that a license to turn a premises into a restaurant has been turned down under the excuse that "there are too many licensed premises", a few months later it gets a licence to be turned into a pub no different to any other in Barnsley.
And then we get a lack of restaurant choice in the town.
And in a decreasing market - the only thing that's actually bucking the trend is the sale of real ale.

Seen lots of attempts turned down by the council in the town centre. They then let a clone of all the rest open up in the same place.

Give the White Heart @ Penistone a go Nudger

Really modern inside, serves really nice food. Its kept absolutely spotless. Really good pub to take a lass or just meet up with your mates and have a few beers and a chat. (Y) (Y)
