The Blades have made moves to prune their playing squad in readiness for the new season - despite being currently without a manager.

United's Football Club Chairman, Terry Robinson - taking centre stage with the latest developments - confirmed that first-team squad members Rob Kozluk, Craig Short, Alan Wright and Paul Gerrard have been released.

Meanwhile, Geoff Horsfield, Jonathan Forte, Ian Ross, David Sommeil, Mamadou Seck and Li Tie have been placed on the transfer list.

He said: "We are working on a list that Neil (Warnock) was preparing before he left - a list that, of course, might have been slightly different had we remained in the Premiership. However, at this stage, we see no reason to change it."

Robinson stated that Kozluk, Short, Wright, and Gerrard, along with youngsters Colin Marrison, Kyle McFadzean, Ryan Gyaki, Dominic Roma, James Ashmore and Sharu Naraji have all been released.

Robinson said: "Rob Kozluk has given us tremendous service and it's fair that he has the opportunity to go to another club. Paul Gerrard, who has been with us on loan, has also been released, and the new manager will decide what cover he wants.

"Alan Wright has hardly featured this season and is released, whilst we feel it's perhaps time for David Sommeil, Ian Ross and Jonathan Forte to move on. So we are open to offers."

He continued: "Li Tie has suffered a lot with injury but he might go back to China on loan - he's a current international but needs more games to help his return to fitness.

"Mamadou Seck has never really got past the Reserve stage and placing him on the transfer list will give him an opportunity to be looked at by other clubs.

"Of the younger players, James Ashmore is perhaps the most unfortunate and he might still be here if we'd retained Premiership status, as would some of his counterparts. Perhaps we've been guilty of producing too many good young players and all of them would be good assets to other clubs, maybe in the South Yorkshire region."

The club have made offers to out-of-contract pair Keith Gillespie and Chris Lucketti, whilst young pro Ben Starosta has signed a two-year contract extension.

Robinson added: "We would like to make offers to Chris and Keith and, although the new man might have different ideas, at this stage we felt that we should try and keep them."

According to Robinson, United have already made tracks in a bid to fill the void left by Gerrard in the goalkeepers' department.

He said: "Six-foot-three inch Trinidadian goalkeeper John Williams has been lined up to come in on trial later this summer. He's only around 23 years old and has played internationally for Trinidad for several years."

Most of them were decent players in the Championship. Short and Wright are passed it though.
