Got a phone call from my credit card company fraud department first thing this morning to say that there had been unusual activity on my credit card and sure enough it seems that someone has got hold of my card details somehow. Happily no harm done, spotted by them straight away and transactions declined. What I'm baffled at is how on earth someone got hold of the details in the first place. Never buy anything online except from the 'big' retailers and always check the security certificate for the site before ordering. Regularly test the firewall on my computer to be certain. Never buy fuel from anywhere other than the supermarkets, usually using only pay at the pump machines, whenever I pay in person the card is always in my sight … And whenever I've used it recently (only non-online place is the vets!) the card has never been out of my sight. How do these people do it??
you'll be surprised at how well they can get these details (i.e. ebay, paypal, "secure" sites etc.) its very easy to get fake page up and make it look exactly like the real one, enter your details and you're done for.
Even at the most secure sites there are employees who are less than trust-worthy and will pass the details of the odd card on. Also some firms may not be as secure as they claim to be and despite their best efforts they can be vulnerable to hackers. There is a new security standard called PCI DSS that deals with the security of card details held by firms. But as with everyting where there is a will there is a way.
theres also a new type of card being trialled, with a digital display on the back and something like buttons on the back too. take a look at the tech section on the bbc, its in there somewhere..
Amazon I had exactly the same but I knew exactly where it originated as it was the first time I had used that card.
Funny you should say that ... The last thing I bought before this happened was from Amazon. Got there via the main page though, no link from an outside page, and the item ordered arrived so it wasn't bogus. Bizarre, no idea about it all but at least no harm was done.
Becoming a bit of a trend is this Amazon thing... got done last year, and one of the sites it could have been was Amazon, although at the time i took my frustrations out on eBay and PayPal. Got me thinking now though!
I had the exact same thing happen a couple of months ago Like you i only bought off of big retailer sites etc.
Petrol stations are definitely ones to watch 2 Murco ones near me both had someone cloning cards as they were used to buy fuel lots of coverage in local press etc. Now they are always the cheapest in the area but I'd rather pay a penny a litre more and avoid them. Never had a problem with online stuff - use a seperate card for that - bought from Amazon lots of times with no problem
RE: Becoming a bit of a trend is this Amazon thing... I had a similar thing with a purchase through amazon but I think it only happens for some amazon marketplace sites (i.e. not amazon itself but sites that advertise through amazon). My bank said that they have alerts for certain sites and will block your card even though no suspicious activity has taken place!!
I've been done 3 times in the last couple of years company card fortunately. I only use it in petrol stations and hotels which are manned predominantly by foreigners
I simply said hotels and petrol stations were predominantly manned by foreigners, which there is no denying is true. The fact that I was ripped off either by hotel or petrol station staff does not imply that it was foreigners that did it, although the odds are in their favour.
use th Jet Garage down the bottom of Whiston, I dont think he has a card machine. His till is older than arkwrights.
