England gone off for bad light, despite going well this morning. Sometimes the sport shoots itself in the foot.
Is there some reason why they cant put the lights on? This is where they lose the part-time watchers....
They come on straight away but take a few mins to reach optimum brightness. Its not exactly a night match so just a little extra light needed therefore a break of no longer than a coule of minutes needed.
I ofen wonder if the breaks in play are a major factor in potential fans not getting hooked. I'm what could be classed as a casual fan but I am losing interest in test match cricket in favour of one day and 20/20 cricket. I wonder how many more feel the same.
A lot. I know a lot of people who don't watch 20/20 because they think its too start-stop. The idea of watching a test match to the VAST majority of my mates would be hell. Then throw in a couple of bad light delays and you've lost the more casual supporters.
Have you played cricket? As said elsewhere it's no fun facing a 70mph short ball (that's my level!) to say nothing of a 90mph snorter, even in bright sunlight. The fielders can't see either, and end up dropping catches and making idiots of themselves. Agree with you about the lights though. Not really sure why they can't be used.
RE: Have you played cricket? Thats my point really, about the lights. In this day and age I think it should be a lot more supporter/viewer friendly. Even Wimbledon have put a roof on....
Cricketers are very touchy about light The light has got to be just right, or you can't pick up the ball properly. I've obviously never played under lights but I do know that batters are OK batting in bright sunlight, and OK batting at night under floodlights. It's the "in-between" light that they don't like, when it is getting dark and they have to change over from natural light to artificial light. You often see poor batting performances in day-night matches in thos conditions. I suspect that is the reason why artificial lights are not used in bad daytime light conditions. However, I agree it would be more customer friendly.
RE: Cricketers are very touchy about light Bob Willis never bothered about batting in poor light but then he didn`t always need a bat either.
