Are there any criteria governing when you can declare? I mean is there any reason we couldn't declare at 200 for 0?
Nope. You can declare at any time. If we can get a healthy lead together by not much after tea we could give ourselves 4 sessions to bowl out the Aussies and still be in with a shout. Edit - In fact, when the Aussies played here a few years ago, the Headingley test was so heavily rain-affected that the two captains agreed to declare on 0-0 and forego an innings each to try and get a result from the game.
No criteria, captain can declare whenever he wants! I remember Atherton declaring with poor old Graeme Hick on 99.
I thought he was on 98 , served him right though as he was messing about when he knew Atherton was looking to declare.(blagger)
RE: I thought he was on 98 , lol it could have been mate, and you are probably right, but bet he was gutted though! Great batsman Graeme Hick, shame he never really carried it all throught to test level.
Hick was unlucky that he came into the team, against Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram when they were in their prime.
mentally weak quality batsman but couldn't do it at test level as he wasn't mentally strong enough. same as Ramprakash
