Just blaring out that it's being going on for ages.

Says he's played with loads of players that would bet on the game they were playing in. Also says he got a phone call to bet on a team losing by more than five goals, and they lost 8-0.

Not sure what to make of it, other than why didn't he mention this sooner (if he didn't)?

Do you think it's that widespread? I know a lot of footballers used to bet on themselves to win. Steve Claridge used to bet he would score quite often. He once had a bet that he'd get a hat-trick against us. It caused a bit of a fuss, so he stopped doing it. Well, he stopped telling anyone that he did it. But are there really lots of players out there betting they'll lose?

Not sure mate. Curtis Woodhouse is adamant though that it's pretty common. I can imagine there's plenty of bets placed on players' scoring, either by that person or by friends, family, etc.

I'm rubbish with pasting images on here, but done a copy and paste job on a couple of Tweets and his reply to me.

woodhousecurtis: had a phone call couple of seasons ago to get on a team to lose by 5 or more, they lost 8-0, everybody cleaned up, not me though! #Football

I'm pretty sure 'the chump' is just using Twitter to cure boredom rather than trying to be sensationalist for ticket sales. He's always active on Twitter, has been for months, so is obviously a fan of interacting. Fair play to him on that front, as he's built a bigger following because of it (and due to his entertaining fights as well).

As I put in the OP, I've already questioned why he hasn't come forward before now, but he's saying it's the norm. Why would anyone come forward about something they're saying is normal behaviour. Depends how you look at it.

I thought were allowed to be bet that you were gonna win or score, just not that you were gonna lose and wouldn't score.

Jamie Rooney got into trouble while playing for Barrow for betting on amount of drop goals in a game. then dropped that many. Dropped a goal for one point while losing about 40 - nil :).

Some of My mates who bet big made a lot of money on his info and some got bookie accounts disabled for it

Has Curtis Woodhouse got an axe to grind with football? Not accusing him of that, I don't know much about the bloke other than he was a professional footballer who quit that for professional boxing.

He's clearly convinced it took place. Can't see any reason why he'd make it up unless he left football acrimoniously. And even then he'd be risking his reputation for very little in return.

No axe to grind at all (as far as I'm aware).

Was managing Sheffield FC until recently, as he left to take on the manager's job at Goole FC - which I think is a step up. He still loves his football, but he isn't half bad at boxing so think it was just a change of direction.

Who knows what's really going on though. Complete opposite reaction to the likes of Kevin Gallagher who was on Radio 5 earlier today.

I'd be very surprised if football players didn't bet on football throughout the history of the game.
I'd be very surprised if football players didn't bet on themselves to perform (score goal, clean sheet, win games, etc).
I'd be surprised if players throughout the history of the game have not taken incentives to help gamblers win bets (corners, bookings, etc).

I'd be very surprised if some were not smart enough to use gambling as a way to supplement their income by betting on their team to lose knowing that they will get extra in the pay packet if they won (win bonuses, etc) ...

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

Think people need to be clear that there's a huge difference between betting on outcomes and fixing a match. Players have always bet on matches, in all sports. Le Tiss bet on the first throw in and attempted to hoof the ball out. Rodney Marsh and Frank Worthington were renowned for having a few quid on themselves to score.

When it comes to giving away penalties, predicting scores etc, that's when it gets dodgy. When scores are accurately predicted, that's when it becomes a genuine conspiracy, as that takes more than one player to be in on it.

The game in question was Weymouth v rushden if I remember.

It was common knowledge in lower league circles Weymouth were going to play bairns and loads lumped on before bookies got wind
