In the middle of an early 50's crisis and in an effort to get a bit of fitness and shed some pounds (stones actually), I bought a mountain bike in the spring and I've done quite a bit of off road cycling since. Question is, as I'm doing more and more milage and autumn approaches, would I be more comfortable in propper cycling clothing, rather than shorts and a t shirt? Is wearing that stretchy stuff a young mans game?
hmm,i'm not far at the back of you age wise and weigh 16 stone.i bought the black lycra cycling shorts and a t shirt and imo look a right pillock in them,so if I'm on the push bike I wear these with some looser fitting shorts/tracky bottoms over the top. its not a young mans game really wearing the tight stuff but for me you've to have the frame to carry it.........just my opinion mind.
Im thinking I'd look a pillock too, just wondering if any bigger older blokes have managed to look good in lycra?
I wear the lycra cycling tights ( I'm 57 and well fat) and in winter a manky pair of cutdown tracky bottoms, it aint a fashion parade , I'm up and down the trans pennine trail dodging dog5hite and its brill, and believe it or not you can get some good biking gear from aldi if you watch for it coming in stock
You'll be fine as long as you don't mess about with your mobile. Went past someone yesterday on one, flagged him off and just his waved his hands as if wasn't any different. If it's an offence for a driver, so be it for a cyclist too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They're more like fitted track suit bottoms. I think there is some Lycra in them but they're not skin tight so they're forgiving. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ronhill-Mens-Trackster-Origin/dp/B0050TOWBY
It's entirely up to you. If you feel a bit of a tit in it then you can always put casual shorts over the top of the Lycra shorts. For short rides I just wear normal shorts. If I'm doing anything over 40k then I'll be wearing Lycra, the pain on the arse is too much otherwise
Everyone's strava mad now, either playing on that or texting. It's one thing seeing it on a path but it's scary when you see someone at the side of traffic on their phone
Try this site. They sell baggy cycling shorts. The Speg ones are okay, and have padding in them http://www.cycle-clothing.co.uk/Ranges/7/cycle-cycling-wear/shorts.aspx
Rothred, Gimson, Jedi ...... I was always a bit self conscious, but I honestly don't give a flying **** now. I'm 48, and pushing 17 stone. I was 18 1/2 st last Feb when I took up road biking. I had done MTB'ing for a while but although I had some epic days out it was always more of a social thing, and I kept in reasonable shape but never enough to start shifting the lbs. I always wore baggy, bulky stuff for MTB. Feb last year, after my second expensive MTB was stolen, a roadie mate talked me into getting a road bike, he said if I could put the miles in, the lbs will roll off. I got the bike, and the lycra etc. I honestly felt a right tit my first day out ...... but when I started seeing results I thought to myself WTF, if it works for me, I am not going to worry about it, and I'm too long in the tooth to worry about s******s and name calling. So although I am never going to be a pro, and never going to ride competitions, I AM going to enjoy it and put the miles in. Bottom line is, tight fitting is more comfortable and safer (try a bend on a descent at speed with loose-fitting shorts getting caught in your saddle ! !) Wearing lycra is not an issue for me anymore. I cannot for the life of me understand why you would don lycra THEN put a pair of shorts over ??? Nonsense. Get yersens up to North Yorks one weekend and see the thousands of cyclists who stop for a coffee at Cav Pav (Google it). All shapes, sizes and ages, and nobody gives a welly what anyone looks like. As for phones and gadgets, I press "start" on my basic Garmin when I set off, and I don't touch it again til I get home. Any analysis is done on my PC and I find it fascinating to look at where I have improved, what my times and distances were etc. But looking at it whilst on the move (or my phone) is an absolute no-no. Finally, I am really glad to see there are a few like me, knocking on a bit and overweight, but happy making the effort to do something about it. Enjoys fellas, and well done. MAMIL and proud
48, 6ft, 12st and when on my bike wear Lycra shorts or tights in winter, jersey, helmet and gloves. Also agree aldi and lidl sell good quality/value kit on their cycling special events. Would also advise SPD pedals/shoes.
I wear the lycra cos it don't get caught in cogs and gears and its warm, but in winter I throw some knee length cut down trackies, but always gloves and helmet. I'm not to keen on road biking, I prefer dog5hite dodging as my roadie mate calls it, but each to their own
