They set off slow for about 90% of the "race" then decide to welly the cycles! Fooking stupid event!!
The first one to go at any kind of pace provides a slipstream for the one behind who can save his energy to overtake near the line. Neither cyclist wants to be the one to go first until they get a certain distance from the line leaving too little space to overtake. Very tactical, I think it's ace.

As explained below its very tactical. I admit to a soft spot for it as my Auntie was 15 times UK track and road champion, GB cycling coach at the LA games in '84 and my cousin was also UK track champion as well as racing in the Commonwealth games. /name dropping (N)
