Maybe it's the Tour de France or whatever, but I fancy getting out on my bike to get a bit fitter.

I've found this site, which looks pretty decent for local rides. http://www.cycle-route.com/routes/South_Yorkshire-Routes-101.html

Basically, any tips from anyone for either bikes, or rides locally? I'm wanting to avoid on road cycling if possible (too many nutters about). Also, doesn't someone on here ride from Sheffield to Oakwell? Fired perhaps? What route do you take, and is there much off road?

    Ta all.

Good to hear Tony. If you're wanting to stay local and off road, you're pretty much restricted to trans pennine trail. Make sure you check out your routes first though, especially in wet weather, as some sections can be tricky

Speaking of the Trans Pennine, you have to watch out for the idiots who think it is funny to change signs around. I've only really seen this near Barnsley - something to do with the local mentality maybe? There are places where you come to a two or three way junction and if you are not sure where you are going having a sign pointing the wrong way really is not helpful. Apart from that it is a fantastic facility, as are all the other converted railway line tracks.

Some of the signs between Stairfoot and town have been removed completely. First time I went that away (about a month ago), I took a wrong turning and came out at the side of that car place at top of Kendray Hill. At least thats safer than the bit from Aldham to Worsbrough which had 6 idiots on motorbikes (at least 2 without helmets) churning the mud up at stupid speeds and making it dangerous and nearly impassible for anyone else.

Must admit I felt a bit uneasy in places the first time I did the it between RSPB place near Darfield and Oakwell lane. As u say some signs gone altogether so have to rely on a built in sense of direction.
