Barnsley bottom of Championship and manager-less I can cope with BUT I have just read something that George Osborne has said that I agree with!!!

"I think there is actually increasingly common agreement across the political spectrum you can't achieve equality of outcome, but you should be able to achieve equality of opportunity.

After Boris Johnson's speech I kind of understand what he was saying but not the way he said it. To me one of the worst things the Labour party did was to try to make everyone equal in terms of Educational qualifications.

Instead of making University places available to those with academic aptitude and ability regardless of background or financial means they went for the 'one-size fits all' approach and tried to make a degree available to all regardless of academic ability. This resulted in a devaluing of the degree and a 'bums on seats' approach to degree content and courses being taken by many universities.

This has also meant that anyone without a degree is seen even more as not deserving of a higher standard of living or, as is often seen nowadays, even a living wage. The country still needs care workers, cleaners, plumbers, drivers electricians etc.etc.etc. and whilst in Germany, for example, engineers and blue collar workers are regarded, not as inferior or subservient to office/administrative 'white collar' workers, but equally valued (As they should be).

It seem the only way to progress in Britain is by being in one of the administrative/managerial/entrepreneurial groups whilst ' hands on' practical people who actually design/make/build the things we need are regarded, not as equals, but as people who should be grateful to the previously mentioned groups for being given a job! HR personnel spring to mind. What income do they actually generate for companies whilst paying themselves inflated salaries and giving themselves fancy job titles??

IMO,the bums on seats approach to university places is as much about keeping the unemployment figures down as it is in providing higher education for all.
