Not my words. Just quoting his. http://www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/sport/article/7965/im-the-one-to-blame-says-danny
I can see why he says that but I dont completely agree - most managers would still have taken us down given the hand he was dealt. it would have been interesting but impossible to ever know whether someone like Holloway could have saved us like he did with Millwall even in a full season its not all down to the manager though - the board have some influence
"We needed to strengthen in certain areas"... he says. I agree, we did. At right back, left back, and up front. Unfortunately, both right backs couldn't get/stay fit or defend. Wiseman (and it pains me to say it) may as well have stayed. We didn't replace our weak link at left back. In fact, we didn't even bring in any competition there. And we released Dagnall and ended up playing one up top once we realised Proschwitz was ******* garbage unless 10 yards out. He's right, Danny. He is to blame. Not entirely, of course. But he failed. Let us hope he gets things right more often next season. You Reds. Etc.
^^^^^^^ Whitey.......agreed Posted earlier today that we desperately need some success and the natural stability that it will bring.
i'll get ridiculously excited about the coming season. like i always do. i'll think we've signed a set of world beaters. i'll spend hours drawing formations and best XI's. i'll start the season thinking about top 6. let's see how it pans out...
McLaughlin was fit when he signed. He got injured in the first game in which he was quality and showed he could both defend and attack. We were all crying out for a new midfield when he took over because ours was so poor. He brought in the players that on paper were good enough and available. Proschwitz whilst not outstanding scored more goals than Dagnall ever would have (God bless him). Hindsight is a wonderful thing - unfortunately, I don't think he had any money/loan spots left to bring in a left back. Least worst scenario. He's not to blame in the slightest IMHO.
Not to blame in the slightest? Bloody nora, mate. Yet had he kept us up, you'd have lauded him all Summer. Tha can't have it both ways. Course he's to blame, whether it be slightly or massively. Any other manager takes over, oversees 26 games or whatever it was, performs as badly as Wilson has done, they'd have been hammered, and probably calls for his head. I laud Danny for what he did in the 90's. I applaud him for returning. I am 100% behind him going forward. But he made a lot of mistakes this past season, and definitely has to shoulder some blame for our relegation. Which he has done, according to that article. Again, I applaud him for doing so and accept some of his excuses for signing the dross that he did, and the gambles he took. He rolled the dice. Proschwitz scored four goals. No idea if Daggers would have got four had Danny kept him and played him. But I'd have seen more graft, more pace, and I think he'd have played better alongside COG. In fact, I know he would. I saw him do so. McLaughlin couldn't defend any better than Wiseman. Hunt, even worse defensively. Both of em showed quality going forward on debut, and Ryan especially showed further glimpses of that. Bolton away I thought he was quality. I hope he returns. You say we were all crying out for a new midfield. I wasn't. I thought O'Brien, Hassell, Dawson (at that point), McCourt and Mellis were all of use, and always cited up front and our defence as our weak areas. He gambled on Frimpong and Shea. Both were a joke. He stopped playing Bobby and Paddy. He brought in Lawrence and Woods, who weren't any better than what we already had. He failed in his recruitment. Not digging him out, just stating my opinion. The players who shone under Danny were the lads already here. That though I give him credit for. He got the best out of Jennings, Steele, O'Brien, M'Voto and even Kennedy to some degree. And so I'm still faithful, I still think Danny has the nous/skills to lead us successfully. I believe his signings were risky, forced upon him (by time constraints). I look forward to seeing his new batch of recruits, where he's the time to assess them properly. I hope and think he'll get it right. We're going to be ok. But yes, he was in part to blame for our relegation. Just as he'd be praised for keeping us up.
Taking aside whether he's to blame for taking us down as those are opinions. But he is definitely to blame for the team selections/tactics fr both the boro and leeds games which were abysmal imo
Hmm. Someone throws you and some mates down a well. They then throw boiling oil, rocks, lava, knives and any other **** down the well on top of you. If you don't get your mates out, is it your fault? Are you to blame? However, if you do some how manage to get them out, do you deserve some credit? It's not about having something both ways. If you are presented with a shitty situation that you didn't cause and has nothing to do with you, but don't manage to rescue the situation, I'm not sure how it's your fault. However, if you do somehow prevent disaster, then you deserve credit. As it is, disaster was not averted, we were relegated, so there's no credit to be handed out, but let's not point the finger at the person brought in to try and sort out the mess, point it at those that caused the mess in the first place. That's where the blame lies. Firemen are employed to put out fires. Sometimes they manage that and properties are saved. Sometimes the situation is too severe, buildings burn to the ground and lives are lost. When that happens, is it the fault of the firemen?
Haha. Some quality analogies there, pal. And I totally see your point. But he was a football manager, and my own points, I stand by. I've not once created a thread or posted a single post suggesting Danny was/is to blame for our relegation. But I do believe he failed, made a lot of mistakes, and couldn't turn around a pretty shitty situation. Do I blame him for that? No. I applaud him for trying, and for making me happy by returning. I adore the bloke. A legend. Always will be, no matter what happens (within reason.. for example, if he Stuart Hall'd or whatever). But he says he's to blame himself. He obviously knows he made errors/mistakes. I agree. Although, I do take that interview as him being a proper man, a proper manager. A lot (Keith Hill) would have suggested it was nowt to do with them. Blamed the last bloke. Danny hasn't. He might actually think he's blameless, I reckon he does think that, but in public, in that interview he's said the right thing. Credit to him for that.
Without question he failed. He set out to prevent relegation and he failed. But failing and being to blame are two different things. Last analogy seeing as you like them: Usain Bolt goes to the next Olympics with the intention of winning 3 gold medals. He wins the individual 100 and 200 metres. In the final of the 4x100m relay the first Jamaican stumbles out of the blocks, they make a right ballacks of the baton change between runners two and three and Usain Bolt receives the baton in last place for the final leg. He begins to catch some of the other sprinters, he takes over one, but he finishes miles back. He fails, but he's not to blame. Danny Wilson took over with us at the bottom of the league. We overtook Yeovil, we outperformed four other clubs during that period, but we were relegated. Danny Wilson failed. But he's not to blame. The time to judge Wilson is next season. If we're ***** again, and struggling, then any criticism he gets he'll deserve. Criticism that is, not abuse. He's got a blank piece of paper now and he can build his own squad this summer. Let's judge how good he is at managing a football club, not at how good he was at sorting out a clusterfcuk.
I don't blame any body. The facts are we've been treading water since promotion and eventually we had to sink.No matter who would have been in charge would have found it hard.I think Danny had plenty of time to turn things but he didn't,thats not blame as such but a fact.I thought if Danny can replicate the work rate and the passion we showed last season we would have been ok,but it wasn't to be.I look forward to his recruitment this summer and hope he can assemble a squad capable of challenging for an automatic return to the Championship.
Bolt would have won though... But cheers. I always end up coming round to your view in the end. Although to be fair to me, I was already 90% there. I subscribe to your final paragraph 100%. I can't wait to see what happens. Unlike many, I'm very optimistic and very excited. But aye, I suppose you're right. Dyson is as well, kind of. Pair of basterds.
Six managers have had a go in our 8 seasons in the Championship, seven if you include Mellon, yet the outcome has been the struggle to survive until now the drop. Not really a lot to choose from any of the managers they`ve all given it a good shot in difficult circumstances. We came into the Championship with not the best squad quality wise, but PC gave funds to try and improve the quality of player, which did happen, then since we have reverted to tightening our belts as contracts have run out we have had to lower our sights on the quality front and the standard has dropped until the inevitable happened. So here we are back to square one. While its not been great in the Championship and we were always going to be up against it financially, surviving for 7 of the 8 seasons has been a small miracle. Danny saying he is partly to blame, just shows what kind of guy he is, and not like some other managers who would gladly lay the blame elsewhere.
At last. Some sense out of the club. Although it is not his fault 100% obviously. Something needed saying.
