http://www.darlington-fc.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10339~2570479,00.html as Barnsley fans we can honestly say "There but by the grace of God go I/us" I hope they resurrect themselves. This is what money, and the likes of Sky, have done to the game .
I don't believe the article "says it all" as it's a biased one sided piece by a fan of the club in trouble. Also Sky aren't to blame for Darlington time and time again spending more than they earn, thus getting themselves in the **** on a regular basis. Most clubs go into administration and second time around are more sensible like ourselves who spend very little now and rightly so are living in our means.
Best of luck to Darlington and all concerned with them. DT, 100% spot on regarding Sky and the money that has destroyed the game. I only wish this was an article about one of the big clubs that have helped to corrupt the game and bleed it so dry there is **** all left lower down the pyramid.
aye and the "big clubs" want even more... the new rules on basically stealing young talent...why not just shut the whole lot down 'cept the Premier Greed
Exactly. By a fan of the club. An innocent fan who only wants to watch the team he supports play football, who had no part to play in whatever mismanagement has gone on at Darlington, behind the scenes, over the years. By all means, don't have sympathy for the greedy few who've put them in this position, but there's nothing wrong with showing a bit of sympathy for a fellow football fan.
Re: aye and the "big clubs" want even more... And the extended parachute payments that were reluctantly agreed to after threats were made regarding 'solidarity payments' if clubs outside the premier league didnt cave in to their wishes.
I hope they survive don't get me wrong, but an impartial article by someone not so attached to the club would have been better. Clubs at ALL levels shouldn't spend money they haven't got, yet lower league clubs get off lightly compared to teams like Southampton, Leicester etc who go into admin through overspending themselves. Darlo will have creditors just like any other business who now might not see the money they are owed, which in turn could put themselves in trouble. How many times have they been in admin now and not learned a lesson? What if they are saved (which we all hope for) and in 1-2 years time they are in the same situation again? Where does it end?
Good article, which doesn't even mention Sky. And Sky have put a lot of money into the game even at the lower leagues, it wasn't them that introduced all-seater stadia which was a huge burden on many clubs, but their money will have gone to improving stadia to the standard we have today. Darlington's problems probably stem from over ambition, building a 20,000 (was it) seater stadium when they were in the 4th division and saying they were going to be in the Premier league in 10 years. I hope they survive, but if not that the fans can emulate what happened at Aldershot and rise from the ashes. Good luck to them.
Completely agree, it's about time that the powers that be in this country (in the footballing world) stop allowing clubs to so blatantly spend beyond their means and get away with it. In fact, it should have been stopped a long time ago. Finally, the Football League seem to be indicating a change in the tide (although we'll see just how determined they are in the next couple of seasons) but I would never wish it on any fan, because all they want to do is support their club.
Maybe some of the businesses haven`t learned their lesson also or haven`t done their homework on the football club.
it dunt matter if any clubs go to the wall....the fans will find summat else to do with their time cheer up hope this helps
Aye let Liverpool be first then that`ll save thee some betting money and free up more time for thee to spend wit bin lids Bob.
i sometimes take the elder bin lid wi me anyhow. I am just saying...it's only a football club...it wouldn't be the end of my world...however for some of the other forumites i wonder..................
As the kit sponsor has been rather uncerimoniously blackened out indicate that even the kit sponsors pulled out or just didn't want to be associated anymore with the club?
Darlington with a pop. of just over 97000 were never going to sustain the spending that they did. A previous owner built that Stadium which can hold more than 20% of the pop. They were always going to hit the buffers with the low attendences they were getting and with Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough in easy travelling distance. Football doesn't seem to learn from its failures and throws good money after bad.
I disagree entirely (nothing new there then). I don't think that sky putting money into the game has destroyed it at all. I believe that the misuse of that money by the FA and selfish egotistical chairmen and owners is what has destroyed the game. Darlington being given money by sky didn't force them to spend more than they earned, that was the choice of their directors, it is them who are to blame and them alone.
