Here we go ....... https://www.orlandocitysc.com/post/2021/06/01/orlando-city-sc-update-forward-daryl-dike ORLANDO, Fla. (June 1, 2021) — Following a four-month loan spell, English Championship side Barnsley F.C. has elected to not exercise the purchase option on forward Daryl Dike, with his rights returning to Orlando City SC today. Dike is currently with the U.S. Men’s National team and is expected to return to the Club following international duty. Further updates on the 20-year-old forward will be made as they become available.
sounds like another one of these we'll never know the detail of. I can only assume the 'transfer fee within our means' was more on the lines of 'if we get promoted'. either way, i'm confused as to why a CEO would go public with such a clause, if they had no intention of exercising it. and if it was an 'if we go up' thing, why they didn't just say that. just sounds like another clause not worth the paper it was written on.
Surprising - but I'm sure the maths has all been done on it and it's in the best interests all round. If the saving on Dike lets us land other targets we just have to trust that the club know what they're doing. There's also the very real possibility that we might have looked to exercise it and been told by the agent that there's no chance of agreeing personal terms.
It's the right call, dont get me wrong if we could get him on a season long loan that would be ideal, but to buy him is going to cost us at least 5m. That amount is going to take our transfer budget in one foul swoop.
I'm speculating here but I think Orlando would release the info like this regardless of what the real story was. We chose not to exercise our option, or was it more like Dike wasn't accepting the wages that Championship football meant we could offer? Dane did say the deal wasn't dependant on being in the Premier League though, but that it would help.
who knows. I suspect it will be the very next question dane gets asked. will be interesting to see what he has to say.
Our club been economical with details? They cannot be unhappy with him as a player and they say we had a fee agreed and didn't mention it wouldn't be affordable if we didn't get promoted.
It's been a very random loan deal. Not so much for the kid himself, but the hype and chatter going on behind it from all quarters.
We've brought this guy in on loan and we have an option to buy and he's well within our price range. Great innit. He's performed better than we could have possibly ever imagine and become an Oakwell legend so we've decided we don't want him.
I’m guessing it’ll be because we’re in different ball parks with regards to wages so there’s no point in wasting anybody’s time trying to agree a deal. Move on to our real transfer targets, which probably needs to include a couple of attackers. Be nice to hear it explained by Dane though. I can only wish Daryl the best of luck. When we signed him I didn’t know a whole lot about him but I was still randomly excited, it worked out well for all parties really.
This. It doesn't matter what fee was agreed, if Dike's agent is pushing for £20k a week or whatever, I'm guessing we'd gracefully bow out of pursuing him.
I'm surprised we've not tried to at least do some sort of deal whereby we sign him with a view to selling him on immediately. What's a few weeks of inflated wages for a windfall of a few million quid? Unless we've effectively done that by letting Orlando buy the option back from us.
Yes, the player signs the contract, but with all due respect Helen, I think it's a bit naïve to think a players agent doesn't colour the players thinking when it comes to remuneration. An agents main concern is self preservation; they absolutely get in the players head in order to get more money from themselves.
Should have agreed personal terms when the fee was agreed. By not doing so it made it all a bit pointless.
What player/agent would be daft enough agree personal terms on a contract that could be 6 months down the road? They could end up vastly underselling themselves (as would have been the case here).
I’d imagine Dike might be wanting a contract from a Premier club. Not saying he’ll definitely get one but he’ll have heard all the talk about it. I think that might hold a bigger sway than wages.
