i have a sneaking suspicion that it is some very similar 'fans' who were chastising Davey for bringing some journeyman, league two at best, maltese striker to the club in the first place that are now having a pop because he is not starting him. also the same fans that critize davey for his ineptitude at substitutions despite the fact his sub scored the goal some fans will never be happy. Must be great never being wrong!!
In fact he has scored 2 goals in his last 3 sub appearences if you count the Man C friendly I dont think he is fit enough to play for 90 mins - might be wrong - if thats the case Davey has to decide whether to Start with him and replace him in the second half - or bring him on against tiring defenders for the last half hour. Personally I'd like to see him start but I am not going to have a pop at Davey for bringing on subs that change the game in our favour. As you say he cant win...
I think you've got to try and take a balanced view. Davey has shown himself to be very good (imho) in the transfer market BUT his tactical decisions did leave people scratching their heads last year - JCR at sweeper was the lowest point I think, I remember him taking Boggy off to put Hammill on at Watford - that didn't go down well (striker off, winger on?). Last year we survived by six points - but it was a bit white knuckle going into the final games (and we still could have been relegated on the final day had Norwich not imploded spectacularly). Previous year was a little bit worse. You can see why he has attracted the criticism. It's not exactly been unfounded. Any number of us were tearing our hair out last season. remember the way that we played (or failed to) against Swansea at home - and the subsequent refusal to face the media? The weak claims that somehow Swansea were the best football team in the division. Hopefully this year he'll continue to bring in the great signings, but he'll stick to playing them in their orthodox positions and we won't persist with the 'hang on for the last ten minutes with five in midfield' tactic that saw us giving away point last year hand over fist. As for sitting back and giving it 'I told you so' - Davey is a long way from being out of the woods yet. A 2-2 draw at Wednesday and a (very satisfying) 1-0 victory over Licoln does not give us the midtable safety that we're entitled to hope for just yet.
You say he might not be fit enough to play 90 minutes, but nor is Macken. Even if Boggy only lasts 70 minutes, its 50 minutes a game longer than he's getting at the moment, and as yu say, he's scoring goals.
there was no I told you so moment from me. I didn't give my feelings on boggy or Davey at all. Just the contradictory nature of many a football fan on these pages. Those that thought Davey shouldn't have signed him think now he's wrong for not starting him. Those that criticise when his subsitutions don't come off now criticise him when they come on and score as they should be starting! He really can't do anything right. For the record I'm neither a massive fan or have as massive dislike for SD. Just hope he does better this year, and I'm as happy to praise when things are going well as I am happy to criticise when things aren't so hot.
I can never understand why anyone would criticise a manager for taking a punt on an unknown (promising) prospect when it hasn't cost us much to do it.
