Caretaker manager Simon Davey has heaped praise on his Barnsley players following the 1-0 win over Ipswich.

Davey was placed in control on Tuesday following Andy Ritchie's departure.

The club's Academy manager admits it has been a turbulent week at Oakwell, so was pleased to see Grant McCann net an injury-time winner on his debut.

"It's always hard when a manager leaves, and everything seems to be in turmoil," said Davey.

"I came in on Tuesday and had to prepare the team and made sure we got a performance today.

"We've done that. I think debuts go one way or the other, and Grant has scored - so I'm pleased.

"I said before the game that if we win and we win 'ugly', then we'll take that.

"I'd rather do that than pass a team off the park and lose. It was a sweet pearl to get the goal two minutes into injury time, and I'm proud of them."

Town chief Jim Magilton (pictured) felt his side secured exactly what they deserved in South Yorkshire.

He said: "It was an awful game. There was no football played, and I thought we were poor.

"We didn't pass the ball at all well and it was a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's show' for us after last week," he added in reference to the win over East Anglian rivals Norwich.

I doubt Magilton would have made exactly the same comments if they had hung on for the draw or even got the win. I'm sure his team in those circumstances, would have ground out a good result against a team battling for survival. Or words to that effect.
