BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey could not have spread his recruitment net wider as the January transfer window stretches towards its third week.
Having put another keeper on the books in ex-Preston and Sheffield Wednesday's 29-year-old David Lucas and brought over a Manchester United left back in Adam Eckersley, the Oakwell chief wants more cover all over the pitch.
The message is that no-one's place in the team appears safe.
"We're passed the Christmas period, the squad we've got has put us third from bottom and we need to improve on that," he said. "It needs a fresh impetus from players outside. The players we've got in are responding as well."
Eckersley is earmarked to make his debut on Saturday against third from top Preston. Davey hopes he won't be the only new face in his squad.
He explained: "We're still in some deals at the moment, we're down the road with some of them. Possibly one will be here within the next day or so. We're yet to have a call on that."
He added: "That's the process we're in. We're in the situation where, in this month every club in the country is after players and specifically we're after players that a lot of clubs are after so we're in the fight to get them.
"We need players in every department. We've got deals on the table for forwards, midfielders and defenders."
Barnsley are still interested in Bury midfielder Dwayne Mattis.
Bury turned down a second bid from Barnsley last week for the 25-year-old.

http://www.mysporttoday.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=4867&ArticleID=1963858&sitecode=shef&sportcode=barnsley
