Davey in 'be patient' plea over signings BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey has asked Reds fans to be patient as he seeks to strengthen his squad. Davey has released a string of players from last season's squad, but as yet has only managed to recruit promising young striker Onome Sodje from York City. But the manager, whose side started pre-season training this week, knows he still has time ADVERTISEMENTon his hands to find some new players. "I'm not going to panic. It would be ideal if we'd managed to get a few more new players in by now, but you learn quickly that football doesn't work as an ideal," Davey told The Star. "We all want fresh faces into the club, we're still working on doing that. "Of course you'd like the new players to be involved in pre-season training, but I had to wait until two days before the start of the season when I signed Heinz Muller. That wasn't ideal, but you have to deal with those sorts of hurdles." Davey has made no secret of his desire to sign new players for the new Championship season, which the Reds kick off this year with an away South Yorkshire derby clash with Sheffield Wednesday on August 8. And ideally a new striker and another keeper are top of Davey's hit list, areas the boss believes the club need cover. "We're still looking for a striker and we're still looking for another goalkeeper to fill that No 2 goalkeeping spot and push Luke Steele hard for the first team jersey," added Davey. "Finding another goalkeeper is proving tough, it's not an ideal situation because whoever comes in knows that Luke will be starting the season. "And we're still looking at finding a striker. We've got Daniel Bogdanovic, Jon Macken, hopefully Iain Hulme, and of course cover with Michael Coulson and Onome Sodje. "But ideally we'd like another striker for cover, it's a long season and you've got to account for injuries."
"And we're still looking at finding a striker. We've got Daniel Bogdanovic, Jon Macken, hopefully Iain Hulme, and of course cover with Michael Coulson and Onome Sodje. Has he forgotten about Oddjob
I noticed that - Also noticed how he's getting his excuses in if we have a bad start. Can see the headlilnes now 'Give us time to gel'.
He seriously cant only be looking for 2 players?? He mentions a goal keeper and striker, but what about Defensive cover (CB, RB/LB), Central Midfield and the Left Wing. How come every time Davey looks to reassure the fans I get more worried about what his plans are for the current season!!
We can hope but as we're on about Davey he'll have big plans for Oddjob this season. The whole statement worries me a lot.
He has said he wants 4 players in but quite rightly the 2 key areas where we need to strengthen are goalkeeper and a striker. We need cover for Steele becuase we don't have any and we need a player who can put the ball in the net. Defensive cover is something we need but we could do that at a later date.
But ideally we'd like another striker for cover Thats the bit that worries me.
Surely any striker we bring in should be the main choice and what we have should be the cover!

Only 1 Fecking striker!! Bogdanovich - looked good still has something to prove, could do a ferenczi though.
Macken - Too old and ****
Odejaye - Too ****
Hume - Quality player, fingers crossed he will recover 100%.
Rest of em - untested and cant imagine they will be first team starters at all this season.

We need 2 strikers, 1 first choice bums on seat signing and then another one who is good enough to start week in week out just incase of injuries. If we dont then as soon as injuries and suspensions start there will be games where macken and oddjob end up being our main strike force and that means league 1 here we come.

One is enough. Provided it's a good striker, and Hume recovers well. Bogdanovic, Hume, Macken & another good striker will be the best strikeforce we've had for years. We probably can't afford to sign two new strikers and strengthen the rest of the wafer thin squad.
'Judge us after ten games' is the usual soundbite .... ... when we have lost the first 3 .... 'that's when the league table starts to take shape' ..... apparently
Pretty much agree with that 4 players is not enough. A keeper, centre half, full back, winger, centre mid and minimum one quality striker needed. That's MINIMUM 6. And that would leave us short if any injuries.
RE: One is NOT enough !!! Is anyone expecting Hume to be as good as before he got injured..............errrr...........NO !!! He wasn't an out and out goalscorer anyway when he was at his best Macken.......everybody on here has said his form is dropping off Coulson........... (dunno) .........who knows, but the bits we have seen indicate he isn't good enough. So that leaves ONE striker.................and that means we need to get two proven strikers in OR..........we have the same season has the last three to look forward to.......and Davey will be gone by November
RE: "Things are going to be different." He's got a new way of standing when he doesn't know what to do, instead of his usual Paul Hart arms folded look he's going for the hands on his hips stance.
It's our fault for being fascists and scrubbers.
And what sort of player would want to live in Kendray?

Who's Simon Davey trying to kid? Cover??? We need a striker to be bought who will start games otherwise we are in the **** because our forward line isn't good enough.
