Yorkshire Post article below: Tykes to offer Davey new deal « Previous « PreviousNext » Next » View GalleryBy Ian Appleyard Exclusive BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey is set to be offered a new improved deal after dragging the club into the race for the Premier League. Chairman Gordon Shepherd last night confirmed that the club had opened talks with the Welshman about securing his services beyond the end of the current season. Davey, 37, was a shock appointment nine months ago when he was invited to step up from the position of Academy coach to replace manager Andy Ritchie. However, after saving the club from relegation last season, Davey has steered Barnsley into the top six of the Championship table. Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne believes it may not be long before the former Preston midfielder is attracting attention from clubs in the Premier League. Davey, meanwhile, insists that he would be happy to stay at Oakwell for the next 20 years. Shepherd told the Yorkshire Post: "We are only 10 games into the season but Simon is doing an excellent job and we think it is both expedient and sensible to start talking now. We have had preliminary talks and the relationship we have is absolutely first class." Cryne added: "If we stay near the top of the league, the bigger clubs will come looking, and it's going to be difficult for Gordon and I to persuade Simon to stay. He is incredibly ambitious." Davey's side, who are unbeaten in the last six games, will entertain Burnley tomorrow at Oakwell knowing that a victory could lift the club into the top two. "If I could be the Barnsley manager for the next 20 years I would love it," Davey admitted yesterday. "It's a compliment when your board has faith in you and it's nice when they are commenting on how good a job you are doing. "They took a lot of stick, a year ago, for appointing me but, hopefully, with the results and the progression we have made, it has rewarded their faith. The job is not done yet and we still have to continue to improve to make sure we are an established Championship side." Davey yesterday poured cold water on speculation linking highly-rated midfielder Brian Howard with a move away from Oakwell. The former England youth international, 24, is producing the sort of form that attracted interest from Chelsea during his time as a Swindon player four years ago and has bagged six goals already this season. But Davey said: "We have not had any contact from any other clubs and Brian has not put in a transfer request or expressed a wish to leave the club. "He is very important to us, he is scoring goals, he is the captain, and he is leading by example. We can't ask for anymore. We must be doing something right if our players are being linked with so called 'bigger' clubs but Brian signed a new deal at the start of the season and is maintaining the view that he is here to stay." Goalkeeper Heinze Muller is another player catching the eye of Premier League scouts and has been linked with both Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers. But Muller, who joined Barnsley in the summer from Lillestrom, intends to achieve his ambition of playing top-flight football with his current employers. "I have been told about things written in the newspapers but it's just speculation and there's nothing in it," he said. "Every player wants to play in the Premier League but I see no reason why I can't do that with Barnsley if we keep playing the way we have done in the last few weeks." Manager Davey, who is still waiting to hear whether Everton will agree to extend Brazilian midfielder Anderson's loan deal for a third month, is weighing up a move for former Leeds United midfielder Gylfi Einarsson. The Icelandic international made 25 appearances for Leeds during a spell at Elland Road but missed the majority of last season with a hip problem. He has joined Barnsley on trial after his contract with Leeds was terminated by mutual consent two months ago.
Coincidence........... is it that Wendy will soon be looking for a new manager around the time we want to tie up our manager (chinny) (chinny) (chinny)
Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year No rush to negotiate a contract with Andy there is still plenty of time for that sort of thing And now Shep can't get Davey infront of a contract with a pen in his hand fast enough He's a bloody old fox that Mr Shep
RE: Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year Thought he'd sold us a pup in Davey ?
RE: Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year
I bet he's been dogged by doubt up until now.

RE: Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year Bit ruff that mate.
I would hardley say he is in a rush "We have had preliminary talks and the relationship we have is absolutely first class" It is good to see/hear positives from the club however it is still only 10 games in so lets hope it long continues and I really hope that the fans remain realistic that consolidation is what we need this season and for them not to expect a promotion challenge
RE: Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year
He could be forgiven for believing he might have been barking up the wrong tree, the appointment has been a bone of contention. Let's hope Davey can now lead us to a play off spot.

.

RE: Can you remember what Shep was saying about Ritchie round about this time last year Davey's nobody's poodle. Some think he's (German) Shepherd's lapdog but I think he's a Rottweiller. Dis temper he has may be his downfall though. Howard's his Chum mind.
