We could learn alot from a team playing in a division where player for player they are generally "inferior" to their opponents:- He needs to install a few things & quick:- 1.Someone has to start making a nuisance of themselves in the area ... at cornes & free kicks in particular ... there is no movement, no threat. Players should be charging about, making runs etc...at worst it makes opponents work, but it can cause mistakes & uncertainty in defence. (Reading's goal at Everton though offside was the classic example)... when do our players ever move about like that? 2. Please will someone make themselves available at throw ins?!! We might as well just hand the ball to the opposition - no one makes himself available - its as if the players think "Oh well I'm marked, he'd better give it to someone else." Result we lose possession. 3. Penalties.... when did we get one? Poor teams don't get penalities. It's time we made our own luck in the box. We won't get any if we don't try to go past players in the area. That means Reid, Nardiello, Hayes & Devaney need to have a go at defenders.... as soon as that happens the crowd will get behind them anyway. 4. Free kicks. Useless. No variety, no invention, no element of surprise. If all they did was address these points we'd be a much better team - and it's not really asking alot.
Our set pieces look amateurish at best. Embarrassing 2nd half when Eckerslike had nobody to throw to. Mind, they were probably only following the orders from the dossier.
Nardiello free kicks and corners. Either hit the first defender, or sail over the top of everybody into the stand at the far side. Who's bright idea was it for him to take everything? Surely the 'best finisher at the club' should be in the box ready to stick it in the net?
I think it was him! He obviously doesn't trust anyone else to do it. WHoever takes 'em should be rattling them in at pace, and Nads should, as you say be in the area.
and another thing!! What's the point of lining up INSIDE the box at free kicks/ corners. That just reduces the space & the manouverability/ power on headers... if you're charging in from outsdie the aree, instead of standing around looking lame, you're far more likely to get some power if you connect with the ball. How many coaching badges do you need to understand that?!!
