also see "vs top half teams" we are 8th........ but then "vs bottom half" we are rock bottom.....

    Is this a motivational problem?

Against so called tougher opposition we seem to have add a higher tempo to our game and work for each other...... This was clear to see in games vs Liverpool, Chelsea, WBA, Watford, Ipswich, Wolves, Bristol City and Stoke. Don't me get me wrong I aint saying the lads don't try against the other sides but we seem to play at a lesser tempo and don't seem to have that killer instinct in front of goal. One big problem I feel we have (as mentioned in a post yesterday) is that our strikers seem to be happier to play provider rather than goal scorer. I find Jon Macken very frustrating at times, he gets into positions and has opportunities to shoot but for some reason lays ball off. Brain Howard is our top goals scorer because he's not afriad to take a pot shot, he sometimes gets stick for being selfish but I wish some of our other strikers would take more responsibility and do the same.

I remember our promotion season from League 1. Both Luton and Southend applied the same tactic i.e. all players whether they be centre half or centre forward would shoot when ever they had a chance in or around the box, or first time shots and it was rare that they crossed the ball. This worked well and both had big goal tally come the end of the season. Okay I know this sounds simple but it is! Don't all junior football coach's still tell there players to get a shot in early on the keeper?

    Straw to clutch at

    V top half teams -1.25ppg
V bottom half teams 1.05 ppg

4 of our remaining games are against top half opposition

How can you be struggling with an average of 1.25ppg against the top half teams - beat Liverpool and Chelsea.

It points to something wrong either with tactics or mindset

It points to a lack of goals from our forwards

Tha cannot win games if tha cant score - no matter how well the team otherwise plays.

A ten goal a season striker would have seen us comfortably mid table
