Watching the BBC Breakfast this morning and there was an article on David Beckham and his building of a new stadium in Miami. His intentions are to build a stadium without any car parking for fans, so the fans have to walk to the stadium and on the way they will get the flavour of the match by stopping at cafes and bars - in a similar way to how British fans watch sport. Apparently North American sports fans drive to a car park straight outside the stadium. This got me thinking about my comments in relation to the rumour that Barnsley Football Club is to be relocated out of town. I said at the time that going to a football match is much more than just sitting in a stadium and watching the game - the walk around town before and after the match is a big part of going to a football match. Obviously this has been recognised now by David Beckham and his company as an important feature of football. Which explains why going to out of town football grounds such as Swilsboro and Donny is such a poor experience.
yes parking well away from the ground in this country and walking in... running the gauntlet of the home fans "Firms"... always a heart warming experience that is.
