Whitby is lovely any time of year....... as for eating out there's some very nice eateries in and around Whitby, and a nice walk around the old Abbey to work up an appetite.
How far do you want to travel? Chatsworth & Bakewell? Could pick up some fabulous meat from the farm shop too
Matlock Bath and Crich.
But I guess if he lives in Derby he's probably been to most nice places around there.

FWF affraid so that is the big problem i'm having Bath Matlock Castleton Bakewell he's already been and he's probably been to some that i've forgotenn about so its hard to think of somewere new
Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall, Bolsover Castle or try one of the gardens listed here http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/see/gardens.aspx If you're prepared to travel a little further Warwick Castle is a great day out. Ticxkets are available online at a discount. Warwick itself is disappointing but Stratford-upon-Avon isnt too far away. Infact maybe just do Stratford http://www.warwick-castle.co.uk/default.aspx?css=1
what about the Forestry Centre at Swadlincote I can't remember the full name, think they have a birds of prey centre - bit different!
Wouldn't worry too much about it - I'm sure the important thing for him will be to spend time with his family than the actual destination.
Rother Valley Park Just off J31 of M1. Nice lake to walk round, fairly flat. Lots of room for kids to run round, play football etc if you have any. But not alot to see, although there are some lakes that attract bird watchers. Small craft workshops at centre with a tea shop. Can hire a boat / canoes if thats what you fancy. If you're feeling really energetic there's a cable water-ski. (Once saw Vinny Jones knock his head on the eaves of the cabin whilst he was walking round there with his girlfriend. LOL) There's a nice pub on Worksop Road called the Yellow Lion, just in Aston, also near the M1 junction or the other way is the Red Lion at Todwick. (Well at least they were when we left 3 years ago). http://www.rothervalleycountrypark.co.uk/
