I'm shocked. I thought it was done and dusted pretty much? If Davey and his team thought that Jamie Ward was worth £400,000 and were vying to get his signature - how the **** could they NOT agree personal terms? I really don't understand it. If we wanted a young, talentend individual who had promise and potential, as well as the ability to do the business right now - then we should have snapped him up. I'd like some further clarification on this, because I'm really confused.
It probably goes like this mate .............. .... Ward might have wanted £10,000 a week for 4 years and we might have offered £2,000 a week for 3 years. As such, no deal
We've gone down that route many times before and it hasn't worked. I'm not too bothered it's fallen through. Hopefully now we can go after someone with championship experience and who is ready for the fight NOW, rather than gambling again on possible potential.
I'm not being funny, but... Does Simon Davey and the team think they're going to get a top, quick, up and coming young striker for peanuts? Then pay him with said savoury delight? Hmmm, I think not. Odejayi...et al.
Lee Hughes as proven over many years he knows where the net is at our level. He's worth the 400K it would take. Birmingham will be looking to offload a striker shortly. We should see who that is. Liam Dickinson as knocked in goals in all three lower leagues within the past 12 months.
or a combination of that and ....... if he waits 6 months and becomes a free agent he can negotiate a lump sum signing on fee (say 200k-half of what Barnsley were going to pay Chesterfield anyway) and also command the same salary Barnsley would have been prepared to pay him from today to boot ...... In 6 months time it's win win ..... the big losers unless he goes now are Chesterfield. I'm guessing we'll have the same problem getting the lad from Carlisle for the same reason too ......
Spot on mate Thats what I thought. Maybe were prepared to take a gamble on waiting until hes a free agent as to save on his transfer fee and be able to pay him what he wants.
Ahem. Lee Hughes - maybe, but personally, with what's gone on in his personal life over the years, I wouldn't be touching him. We won't get anyone from Birmingham - at least not for peanuts. Liam Dickinson - good call. Very good shot on him, but crap in the air.
How do you know that? Nobody knows the ins and outs of what we offer players. For all you know Ward may have asked for ridiculous wages. Like you said, £400k is a fairly big transfer fee for us so to pull out at this stage, there must have been a drastic difference in negotiations.
RE: Hughes A mate of mine heard on saturday at the Galfarm from one of the Oldham directors that he was talking to Donny.
We've still got what we offered Kevin Phillips lying around....Surely we can get a Birmingham striker when Boyd joins and they look to get rid of one....Maybe Phillips, who will find it harder to get a game....Possibly Jerome.
What about Simon Cox? We'll struggle to get a 'Championship' striker that's on the right side of 30 for under a million.
How do you know we offered "peanuts"? I'm glad the club sticks to its guns & doesn't break its wage structure for someone who's seemingly getting ahead of himself. To me his agent has played a game with Barnsley to find a better deal for his client - that's what happens. If Ward wants to sit in the resrves somewhere else, or wait til he can get bigger wages elsewhere - good luck to him. BFC made a good offer to Chesterfield (I'd say that £400k is very good money for a player unproven at this level - Howard (proven at this level) gone for £500k). I have faith that BFC made a reasonable offer to Ward - it wouldn't make sense to make a good offer to the club, but not the player. If he can get better elsewhere fair enough. Move on. If BFC let unproven players start holding us to ransom we'll just end up where we were 6 years ago - walking to Chesterfield to raise money for a club in Admin.
Jamie Ward Deal Falls Through Jamie Ward will not become a Barnsley player after Jamie and his representatives failed to agree terms. It would appear that Jamie Ward's believes he can do a better deal when he is out of contract in the summer and becomes a free agent. Simon Davey is believed to have a number of other targets in his sights and will pursue those since the Jamie Ward deal is dead.
