When defending corners why do most teams bring every man back behind the ball.

If the defending team leaves 3 or 4 players around the half way line the attacking team will leave 4,5 or even 6 back. This would leave the box less congested and make it easier for the keeper to claim any crosses close to him, or defenders to get to the ball first.

Considering the number of set pieces we've conceded from away from home surely it wouldn't do us any harm to try. What do the smaller players like JCR and Howard offer us when defending corners anyway? Surely better to have the pace and trickery ready to launch counter attacks.

    All very well saying that

But what if the attacking team put 8 men in the box, are you going to leave 4 upfield and leave them unmarked?
