It's pretty obvious, isn't it? A "pointless game" is, essentially, a league game played that you have lost and gained no points from. Or it could be an end of season, meaningless fixture which neither moves your team up nor down in the league table. You might win, and bag the points, but it makes no difference to the end of season postion. Wigan Athletic V Barnsley yesterday doesn't fit into either of those categories because it was a cup game. A pretty big one actually. We were playing a recently established Premier league team who have also won the FA Cup not long ago. In their own backyard no less. The winners went through to a winnable northern final against Fleetwood or Morecambe. I would back us to beat either of those over two legs, every time. So, what might come of that? A trip to Wembley in front of maybe tens of thousands of "loyal supporters", national TV exposure (we could do with some more of that), some prize money and a big chunk of silverware to stick in our trophy cabinet, provided someone can find the key . We've finally discovered the secret of winning games again and the on-field performances are picking up nicely. From the lowest, darkest point we have been at in decades there is light up there, and we are in reach of it. I know that some on here will still clamour for sackings but it's a waste of time. This season will still go down as a bad one. Third Division survival (even in mid table) and a JPT win will not be enough, will it? We will go again next August with a lot of experience under the belts of both players and management. Then we can really see what they are made of. Pointless game? Pointless competition? Definitely not in my opinion.
Just a point of pedantry; in a "normal" game it would have been a draw not a win. So not sure on the rediscovery of how to win.
Hm, you are being pendantic aren't you!! We won, we were better all game, we knew how to score penalties. That will do for me. And the core of this team will still be here after January, I am sure of it. Couple of good additions and the playoffs charge is on
There's one player that is making the difference certainly in an attacking sense as try still can't defend for ****! Hopefully that player can be kept!
We have won 1 out of 11 league games (and would have lost 10 out of 11 but for a last minute equaliser) lost to a non league team in the cup and didn't actually win yesterday. When I see us regularly winning particularly at Oakwell, then we can say we are moving forward.
It certainly wasn't pointless to me, my dad, the 1,000+ other Reds fans there, the players and Lee Johnson. We all know we've been crap in the league this season, we know that yesterday didn't yield any points on the board, but we still came away from a good side with a victory. People still whinging after a rare win can do one.
I enjoyed yesterday good performance and good result. Not getting carried away but great to have a good away day for a change. I've wanted us to really go for this all season so not a pointless game but no real indicator of our season. A bit of fun.
Good lad, the only pointless game I can think of would be for example a champions league game where first and second are assured but they have to play each other in the last game.
