Giles Barnes continued his spectacular scoring streak with a second-half double to earn Derby only their second home win of the season.

Barnsley had taken the lead on 12 minutes through Bobby Hassell and the Rams were looking ever more anxious as the game went on.

Arturo Lupoli hit a post before Barnes - on the back of that screamer at Cardiff - levelled with a fine shot from the edge of the box on 72 minutes.

And just three minutes later the teenager popped up with an even more spectacular effort that whistled into the top corner.

The teenager had also seen a first-half effort ruled out for offside.

Darren Moore returned to the Derby line-up to face Barnsley - and was handed the captain's armband.

Moore took over in central defence from the injured Michael Johnson but with Matt Oakley also absent, he was handed the skipper's duty for the night.

Oakley was out of the 16 altogether and Morten Bisgaard dropped to the bench, with Adam Bolder and Giles Barnes coming in.

Barnsley had much of the early possession and were looking to ex-Ram Michael McIndoe to provide their creative force, but Derby were dealing well with his crosses from the left.

At the other end a skied clearance dropped in front of Barnes - "shoot" cried the crowd - but the teenager couldn't repeat his spectacular effort from Ninian Park.

But the visitors opened the scoring on 12 minutes with what could only be described as a sloppy goal given away.

McIndoe floated a corner over from the left, Stephen Bywater came out but got nowhere near it, and right-back Bobby Hassell rammed home the ball at the far post.

Seconds later Marc Richards broke through clear of the defence and although Bywater came out to block, the ball rolled dangerously towards goal before Marc Edworthy intervened.

Derby should have found themselves two behind on 18 when Dean Leacock was caught in possession and Tommy Wright went through, but the Barnsley man forced his shot wide with just Bywater to beat.

Barnsley were playing the ball around with a confidence that belied their poor recent run of form and Richards was next to threaten with a 21st-minute header that dropped safely over Bywater's goal.

Another McIndoe corner almost created another Hassell goal on 27 minutes but this time the defender's shot was blocked in front of goal, with Bywater having again come out but not claimed.

The Rams' first shot on target came 31 minutes in via Steve Howard's 20-yarder that was straight at Nick Colgan, although the Barnsley keeper could only grasp it at the second attempt with Jon Stead closing in.

Arturo Lupoli jinked and twisted on the left before firing in a low left-footer towards the near post that Colgan again failed to hold first time, but no Derby player could get to the loose ball.

Barnes had the ball in the back of the net shortly before half-time, though the whistle had already gone to pull him back for offside.

Both sides made a change at the interval.

Neil Austin came on for Barnsley, a straight swap in place of goalscorer Hassell, while Derby introduced Ryan Smith for Stead.

That saw them revert to a more orthodox 4-4-2 formation with Smith on the left of midfield, Barnes on the right, and Lupoli up front with Howard.

But it was Barnsley who had the second half's first opportunity though Wright couldn't make the most of a free header eight yards out and could only find the hands of Bywater.

Richards should have doubled the lead on 52 minutes as Derby once again gave away possession in midfield.

This time Martin Devaney broke down the right and his excellent low cross found the front-man with the goal at his mercy, but somehow he stabbed his shot wide.

Seth Johnson, enjoying a good individual evening, warmed the hands of Colgan with a powerful 20-yarder - again, the keeper failed to hold it but again he grabbed it at the second attempt.

Derby made their second change just before the hour and it was another attacking one as Morten Bisgaard replaced Adam Bolder.

On 66 the Rams were an inch away from levelling when the two old Arsenal team-mates combined.

Smith found space on the left and pulled the ball back for Lupoli, whose shot from the penalty spot was deflected on to the post with Colgan totally beaten.

Bywater let Sam Togwell's low drive squirm away from his grasp but then did well to recover as the Barnsley midfielder closed in, before Richards went into the notebook for a foul on Barnes.

From the resulting 72nd-minute free-kick the visitors could only half-clear and the ball dropped to Barnes, who - this time with his left foot - crashed another spectacular shot into the back of the net.

Colgan had no chance as the teenager netted his first senior goal at Pride Park.

The goal clearly lifted Derby and within three minutes they were in front - and once again, Barnes was the spectacular scorer.

Barnsley failed to clear their lines from a corner and the ball rolled out as far as the 18-year-old on the edge of the box, and he found the top corner with a thunderous right-footer.

Having been rocked by the quickfire blast, the visitors had to change things and threw on Paul Hayes in place of Tommy Wright with 12 minutes left.

Danny Nardiello replaced Richards with seven minutes left as Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie sent his side in search of an equaliser.

Nardiello thought he had equalised on 86 when he tapped in after Bywater dropped McIndoe's edge-of-the-box shot at the striker's feet, but as with Barnes in the first half he was denied by a linesman's flag for offside.

Richard Jackson replaced Edworthy in stoppage-time as boss Billy Davies ran down the clock.

Barnes had his sights set on a treble when the Rams won a free-kick 25 yards out but Bisgaard pulled rank, only to fire wildly over the bar.

There were some late nerves, but the whistle blew to much jubilation among the Pride Park faithful.
