It's always going to split opinion because so many people just don't like Gervais and refuse to acknowledge some of the quality writing he's done, and also because people want their comedy to be a laugh a second, but I thought it was a fantastic series throughout. Thought it was really good to see Kev get emotional and not just be crude throughout, and that it was a touching end to a good series. Already looking forward to the second series that has been commissioned.
Oh you b*gger - you got me to read this thread and I won't get to watch it until tomorrow night at the earliest. Aaaaaaaaaaagh!
The best things always will divide opinion, it means they challenge conventional perceptions. I'm not a big fan of Gervais' personality and wish I'd not seen the 'making of' Derek, but he has certainly made a good, unique contribution. I'm very aware I'm being manipulated all the time and emotionally steered, but it is obvious and harmless like the corny Coldplay song. Kev's monologue at the end was really touching I agree, particularly as we had watched him for the whole series thinking he'd got zero self-awareness. I was an amazing piece of acting, and very well edited with the scenes of Derek with his Dad. A fantastic end to the series. Sorry Calgary, shutting up now!
I had a tear in my eye (a few actually). Dont want to ruin it for Calgary, but the story at the beginning was so real. Happens to everyone at some point. Beaufituly done.
Sorry mate, it is usually repeated at 11pm on Thursdays but not listed this week. It'll be on 4OD, I'm going to watch the whole series back to back sometime on Sunday, hopefully.
Watched it yesterday and my God what an ending. I'm not a Gervais fan. Never watched Idiot Abroad or Office. This is brilliant though. I've a couple of autistic nephews and don't find the Derek character offensive at all. I think it's great that Ricky has brought awareness to the issue. That these people are inteligent in their own way and have feelings just like the rest of us. Kev and Dougie showing their sensitive sides was very well written. Having a Coldplay song like Fix You playing during a funeral was perfect. Derek getting our of the car to forgive his dad showed what an heart of gold he's got. When he looks at the camera with a smile and says "i've got a dad" as last words of the series that was the perfect ending. It's a shame the next series won't be till next year. It should be a longer series too. Change it from 6 episodes to 10.
Agreed. What a great ending. I got to watch it on Friday night (and decided Saturday morning wasn't the time to write about it on here). I'm glad you lot mention tv stuff from time-to-time as I would not have known about this series otherwise. Brilliant writing on a sensitive subject and some great acting along the way. Kev and Dougie really crack me up. Roll on the next series.
Funny you say that living in North America as i'd say over here I probably watch way more American programmes than UK ones strangely.
And I watch way more UK ones than American! Not that there are many British programmes on tv here - only Downton Abbey and Corrie that I can think of, but we have ways of finding stuff we want to watch on t'internet (the Biz is the one we use). I can't think of a single American show that I watch.
Big Bang Theory is excellent, best to get the DVDs and start at the beginning. Derek has been superb though. For all the caricature and sentimentality, it tackled issues concerning the elderly front on from the very first minute. When Dougie called the budget cutting civil servant a nob-head that may as well been David Cameron standing there. It's given the 'we're all right Jack' Tories a right smack in the face that I bet even Ken Loach is jealous of. It's art making a serious point and I quite admire Gervais for not trying to wave any flags just getting on with what he does. Another series would be great, it's crying out for a Xmas special too!
