Ive never been and due to having a Dog thats in gods waiting room, a foriegn holiday is out of the question this year. So me and funstopper general (the wife) have decided a static caravan holiday down this neck would be a pleasant change, but neither of us have the first idea where to start. We have 2 kids max 10, lola 3 and were also takin our furry first born Dave.
I suppose im picturing a well run site with good on site amenities thats not too far from a decent town centre and a little drive from a decent sandy beach (not asking much am i). So if any tarn lads n lasses have been to a good area or specifically a good site down that way, i would be grateful if you could make a suggestion. Ive just been on a few websites but dont know wheres best and sometimes its best to get ideas from folk thats been.
    Thanks in advance.

I was based at RNAS Culdrose and a good base would be Helston. Great pub nearby is The Halzephron Inn and then follow this same road to the beach with St Mellion Golf Course as a backdrop. Right on the beach is a lovely tiny church and the graveyard is worth a look particularly the graves (next to each other) who sadly died whilst living in the area as children evacuated from London (I think) during the blitz in WW2.

It's a lovely area and your dog will love the many sandy beaches.

Also, the pub has a small campsite behind (or at least it did as it's a few years since I left Culdrose).

we went to st. merryn, which was just outside padstow. nice enough, but wasn't a fan tbh. wouldn't go back in a hurry. getting there and back was a nightmare. had to stop every few hours to give the little boy a break, so it took forever..

Load of caravan parks dotted around, and nowheres that far to drive if you're fairly central. North coast is generally more rugged and dramatic. Newquay can be a turn off at peak times to some, although others love it, again loads of caravan parks around there and there's supermarkets just outside of the town. Just leave plenty of time for the journey though as the A30 is still due to have road works this summer just before Bodmin i believe and they were causing hold ups last year.

Think you mean Mullion golf course. St mellion is at the other end of the county near PLymouth( and not near to a beach.)

Im torn bewteen devon and cornwall because I have had some fabulous family holidays in both, but if I'd got two young kids in the car, I'd go for woolacombe as its at least an hour nearer. Woolacombe is a lovely little surfy, seaside town, fantastic beach and sea, with lots of places to visit close by.

Can't remember the name of the site, but many years ago we stopped at St. Minver, good location providing you have a vehicle.

    Good advice.

When our kids were younger we used to set off 6pm- 7pm, get past Bristol and stay in a Travel lodge/ Premier Inn somewhere South of Bristol. Short burst the next morning on to Devon.

The pre season we were in administration a friend got married on 1st Aug(friday) reds played bradford at oakwell the next day. I left the car park by the metrodome at 5.05 and pulled up at mine in Bodmin at 9.30. Didn't drive at stupid speeds, never took the car out of fifth until I hit the roundabout on the A30 which has since been removed. Quite often once I was past Bristol I couldn't see another cat on the road. Best drive down I've ever had.

    That's good going. It's a long journey.

The season we got to the Prem, I had a ticket for Portsmouth away, on the Tuesday night. Unfortunately it clashed with an event at work. I left Barnsley at 2.30pm, and was sitting in the executive lounge at Fratton Park at 6.00pm, having dropped my car off and had a very quick shower at my sister's flat in Southsea. Just got so lucky with the traffic. Never had to stop once. Doubt it would even be possible now.

    Well heres a few suggestions

look at Minehead, Ilfracombe and Barnstaple.... however also take a look at Pembroke in S.Wales... its just across the Bristol channel from where I have just said... Tenby, Saundersfooot , Pendine... you have some fab holiday parks (static vans).... and in the area there are some great theme parks noteably " Oakwood" a slightly smaller version of Alton Towers ... "Folly Farm"... "Dino Land" there is a safari style park too, and a huge garden thing under huge domes showing all manner of plants like rain forests etc. Then theres also a good amount of historic places, Castles. Pre-historic sites... Cathedrals... To travel from Tarn it would be M1.. M42.. M5.. M50.. M4.. easy... 4 hour trip 5 hour if the traffic is bad... oh and by the way the weather in summer is just as good as north Devon/ Summerset

Sorry, you are quite right it is Mullion golf club. I was working from memory and trying to help the OP; and, actually, there are many beaches near Plymouth-I used to live at Staddiscombe near Plymouth as well as Helston, and for example Mountbatten beach is really nice and near Plymouth.

Agree with that Dragon, I love saundersfoot. Ive spent many an hour fishing off that harbour wall and making sandcastles on the beach with the kids.

Also, don't say it too loudly, but Broadhaven beach has got to be one of the best in Britain

    Broadhaven beach

yup agree.... but however.. Newgale is better as is Whitesands near Saint Davids... ( and the cathedral at St Davids is awesome) but for delight did you ever go to Little Haven or Druids Haven... magical.. Devon and Cornwall get all the publicity... But seriously the welsh coast from Swansea the Mumbles round the Gower Peninsular and then righ round to St Davids Is totally fabulous. Also the amount of Ents that OneMickeyButler is wanting is totally on tap

Take a look at Wood Farm Holidays, Bude. That has everything you are asking for, we had 2 good holidays there.
