in this weeks independant on sunday (24th July). It's a good read about how the club are trying to save money through being more energy efficient. Below is a sample. Well done BFC

Barnsley Football Club is looking for bright ideas to improve its energy efficiency, finds Kate Hilpern

It's a new sort of Barnsley chop: the costs that have to be cut to keep a football club on its feet and improve value-for-money for supporters. And like a growing number of businesses, Barnsley FC is homing in on energy efficiency. "We have been suffering from financial problems to the extent that, in the past four or five years, there has been a lot of uncertainty over the club," admits the general manager, Don Rowing.

"Like many football clubs, we've overspent. We've realised we need to treat it more like a business and make savings wherever possible."

I've noticed a couple of energy saving measures

They've stopped using the PA system, or at least started switching the various speakers on and off at random.
And the fridges for the drinks are no longer switched on to ensure you enjoy Coca Cola at its tepid best!

Must be saving them a fortune!

Any examples of what they were actually doing to achieve this?

They only use 2 20W lightbulbs to provide light for the entire West Stand.

Apparently, since the catering has been outsourced to Brooklands the meals provided to the 1st team squad have to be paid for by the players themselves.

Obviously they can opt out and take their own sandwiches, but as they are athletes who have to eat the correct food is that right? It is OK for those on a good wage but what about the low paid senior and 1st year professionals. I know one who is just on the equivalent of the minimum wage. Apparently he could go back to university, get a part time job & play non-league football and be financially better off.

That's not exactly true. They've only been taxed on them for the last 4 years or so.
