I used to play 5 a side there a lot & also play pool & go to the disco. The DJ used to play a mix of punk & northern soul & was probably the person who turned me on to music, although at the time I was more interested in Space Invaders & the odd girl who might turn up for the disco. If anyone knows who the DJ was I will buy him a pint any day. I particularly remember him playing "Ghost In My House", "In To The Valley", "At the Edge" & "Games Without Frontiers" …. Without him I doubt I'd be DJing today. I know what happened to the guy who ran it, Keith Steele. I don't know if those allegations that led to his death were true. That is not the point of this post. It is about that DJ!
Me!! Well it was more like 1980/1 Happy days. Played pool, watched films in that cinema room, and went in the disco. Galaxian was my arcade game of choice. Soup and a tea cake from the snack bar, and 2p on the bus home. If you tell me you're from Lundwood, I'll start panicking!
The DJ was a bloke called Smith ,who went on to work at radio dee daa . His younger brother Colin took over then with his mate Martin Telfer( now a barrister ) although this would be 1974-77 ish . Wot happened to I Steele .
I was one of the helpers for a couple of years or so 1979 to 1980 but just weekends. Keith got me to run one of the football teams and I would pick the team, go with them on SundAys to matches and write a report with player ratings, posted on the notice board. Happy days but strange as well. I did all that and more around the club without any experience or training in youth leadership and no CRB checks in those days. Seems like a hundred years ago
