.....cant remember it being used for any other town But Look North and Calendar News used it as a general term to mean all other towns in the district
It traditionally 'Black Friday', but probably twisted into the saying 'Mad Friday' by someone (maybe in Barnsley) years ago and the terms stuck and spread.
'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts It always was and should be 'BiMBo's - cos it was always the council do that everyone tagged on with. Remember buying tickets for it in Whispers/Regents Park. 'Mad Friday' - ffs.
Re: 'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts Bimbos wasn't always on a Friday though was it? Seem to remember it being midweek. Wearebarnsley did a video out on Mad Friday last year - Some fine specimens in this footage:
Re: 'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts No, but nobody ever referred to 'mad friday' That vid is awesome. Few familiar faces.
Re: 'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts Yes, Simon hurst on galaxy talked about it a lot and other towns picked up on it, I've worked in Leeds, Cas & Wakey over the past 12 years and until recently they didn't know what it was. My workmates in Leeds mentioned it being Black Sunday
Re: 'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts It's known as Black Eye Friday in the north east
Re: 'Mad Friday' is actually a phrase coined by tw@ts its nice to know Barnsley is known for drunken 50 year olds staggering round town during shopping hours , and pissed up women falling under trains fantastic !
I'd never heard of it until a couple of years ago and that was on here And I've still never heard anyone mention it outside of this BBS. I still don't really know what it is. And I've lived for 33 of my 40 years in Barnsley.
Re: I'd never heard of it until a couple of years ago and that was on here Really? Where about in Barnsley you from? I've grown up knowing what it is but my parents usually go out for it so I suppose that's why.
Was always known as Bimbos, The occasional drinkers getting rat arsed and taken advantage of was the appeal to many. Mad Friday was probably coined by the police and emergency services.
TWO MAD FRIDAYS THIS YEAR !!!...............Bimbos is something completely different .............and both were absolutly BRILLIANT !!! If you have never experienced Mad Friday then you aint lived..........its what living in Barnsley is all about........one big happy family. All the town centre boozers packed. Everybody wishing each other a happy Christmas, shaking hands, Christmas kisses, loads of dancing, loud music and plenty of drinking Always hear about one or two problems but in all the years I've been doing Mad Friday I haven't seen any bother at all. Bimbos related to the council office do which was always held on the last Friday........Mad Friday. At one time it was essential that you got a ticket because Bimbos was open between the hours of 3 and 6 oclock when all the pubs in town were shut. So it were round the boozers until 3 then in the Bimbos do until 6ish then out and straight back into the boozers until you could actually feel beer flowing out of your ears.....then you knew it were time for a taxi Now the pubs are open all day so its a matter of just getting into town and walking around the boozers and talking to all the people that you know.
Re: TWO MAD FRIDAYS THIS YEAR !!!...............Bimbos is something completely differ Mad Friday on wiki mentions Manchester and East Lancs, but that only dates from 2010
Re: I'd never heard of it until a couple of years ago and that was on here Same here I first heard it on here two or three years ago and since then ive heard it a lot of times but only ever on here. I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else. Odd because people on here reckon it's quite common. Must be just me and you.
Re: I'd never heard of it until a couple of years ago and that was on here I'm with you on this Jay. Lived in Barnsley for 45 of 49 years and never heard the term until recently. Yes, I was aware and participated in the custom of going out in town the Friday before Xmas but when I used to do it in the 80's it didn't have a name. I work in Halifax and people refer to it there as well.
I've been doing Mad Friday since the 1980s.........never miss it So I suppose i must be older than most on here....... Remember Wellington Street used to be cordoned off and it was a sea of people from the top to the bottom of the street. I also remember circus acts on the street such as fire eaters, juglers and guys on stilts........it was just foooking MAD MAD MAD Not as mad these days but I still cant miss it
