Basically, I'm getting a bit fat.

Any ideas on how to shift some weight, with minimal effort on my part and with still being able to eat well

Stop eating = Wrong, wrong advice.

Doing that will only cause your metabolism to slow down, and preserve more fat, as your body thinks it is going into starvation mode.

The best thing to do, is only eat (starchy - bread, chips, porridge, rice etc) carbs on a morning, or 30 minutes before you hit the gym. Have a nice bowl of porridge for breakfast with some honey mixed in and then go for a brisk walk around the block. The best time to do cardio is on a morning, after eating a juicy piece of fruit: pears, grapes, oranges will all do nicely, and aid in 'tricking' your body into kickstarting your metabolism. Doing cardio on an empty stomach, especially in the morning is a bad idea, as you won't have eaten for nigh on 12 hours, and once again, your body will be in fat preservation mode; that's why it's called 'breakfast', because your are literally 'breaking' your 'fast'. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and is an opportune time to get some carbs loaded in. Wholemeal toast with eggs or porridge are ideal starts. Stay away from cartoned juices - they are chock full of sugar. If you are going to drink orange juice/fruit juices, then make your own.

You should be aiming to eat 3-5 meals a day, albeit, fairly small meals. They should contain protein; chicken, beef, tuna, salmon, eggs etc; veggie carbs; broccoli, carrots, cauliflower etc and every once in a while, feel free to make some home made mayonnaise or something, just to keep your senses going. One of my top tips, is to eat a couple of spoonfuls of cottage cheese or peanut butter right before bedtime. Not only will it quench your hunger, but it will also act as a slow burning protein, steadily digesting throughout the night as you sleep. DON'T eat any starchy carbs at least 5 hours before bedtime - you don't need them, so why eat them? It's like putting fuel in a full petrol tank - it's not required; only put it in when it's needed, that means for your body - on a morning or right before you give it a pounding in the gym. You should be aiming to do at least 20 minutes of cardio, 3-5 times a week as well as lifting weights as this also burns away fat, as well as expanding your muscle. Anyways, I could write more, but my hands are hurting: PM me if you want any more info.

Also, nearly forgot: Drink 1.5 - 2.5 litres of water per day; your muscles are 70% water, and the more water you drink, the more your body will fight to get rid of it, rather than store it, making you look even more dumpier.

Fruit, small pasta salad for lunch, stir fry and fish for tea + exercise

I lost a stone and a half in about 4 months and have kept the weight off for 5 months now ready for the wedding

    Nicely done mate.

One bit of advice I would give, is to add some meat in with that pasta at lunch time; eating meat causes your metabolism to speed up. Ever started sweating after eating a big, juicy steak? That's your metabolism going into overdrive to try and burn it up quickly.

Make sure you eat at least SOME protein with every meal.

Start by just writing down everything you eat. Once you are monitoring it, start planning what you should be eating each day. Don't go mad by eating too little, just cut the obvious crap out. When you are aware of exactly what you are eating, and always have a plan what you should be eating, its much easier.

Ive lost 40lbs since turn of year mate

Stopped drinking beer - I now drink JD and diet coke. Stopped eating takeaways, bread and other crap.

Just bought a new mountain bike and do 7-8 miles most days of the week.

I feel brilliant - have dropped two waist sizes and lost and am looking at playing over 35 footy next season.

I feel fitter than I have done in 10 yrs.

Just be sensible and dont do fad diets. Its simple.

I've lost about the same in the same time

I've cut down on the beer, I don't eat fatty foods, but still have a nice big filling tea and only eat fruit between meals. I also walk about 4-6 miles every day. I'm under thirteen stone now down from 15 and a half. I want to get down to 12 stone. I'll then keep up the walking and the healthy eating but allow myself a few more beers on the weekend.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.
Eat what you like, and sod it.

I mean, is it worth it? We're all going to die eventually, so why miss out on eating things you enjoy?

Now, where's my aero and cheese sandwich? In syrup.
