Need a digital camera that is primarily for photography (i.e. need decent resolution / optical zoom, presumably) but will also do a bit of video (but not at expense of still picture quality). The above sentence probably represents the sum total of my knowledge on the subject. Any suggestions?
you don't need to spend owt near that much for top, top quality http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B5KFHM/qid=1136389497/026-2017551-9920428 good review here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonA620/ and here http://www.photoxels.com/canon-a620.html
RE: Up to about 400 quid? (n/t) Ive got a Kodak DX7590 that I got late last year cost about £200 as I remember and Im really chuffed with it easy to use great pics (5 mega pixels) and decent videos. Did a lot of looking /asking at the time and that was the best value
Thanks all Looked at the dpreview review of the Canon - looks just the ticket. Going to read the review of the Kodak once my brain has had time to recover from the technobabble - shouldn't be more than a couple of days. Not got to buy it until the missus's birthday on the 9th. Thanks everyone, Burgundy Red
depends on what you want a330 finepix is what I got from them-no problems at all
they tend to get job lots cheap-pop down or give them a ring

RE: depends on what you want Cheers Paul, I'll check out the range then, when I'm ready to face dpreview again. "Popping down" to Asda's a bit of a problem (the clue's in the username) but I'm sure I could find a local / online stockist.
RE: Up to about 400 quid? (n/t) any olympus cameras 4mp upwards i think comet were doing an offer of half price over new year model d345 £88 half price these cameras take superb pics trust me!
Re: Olympus We have an ancient Olympus one (1.3 mpixels). Quite happy with it but software wasn't great.
Downloading to PC Speaking of which, has that improved in the last few years 'cos it takes for ever on my old olympus.
RE: Downloading to PC can only speak for myself but the Kodak is very quick and the softwares really good too I had a Casio b4 which was a bit slow and a bit of a pain to use
Dont forget that unless you are going to have your pics printed other than at home, you will need a good quality printer : dont waste cash on a high pixel count camera if your printer cant deliver the quality.
