POLICE IN BARNSLEY WARN RESIDENTS TO BE ALERT FOR BOGUS CALLERS

AT approximately 18:50hrs on 1 September, 2009, £3000 was stolen from the home of an elderly woman living in Wellgate, Mapplewell, Barnsley by a man posing as a water board official.

Police are warning residents not to accept cold calls from people they do not know.

Crime Prevention Officer John Mynett said: "Bogus callers are people who pretend to be from somewhere like the water board, electricity company, or even a builder's merchant when in actual fact they are not. If you have not made an appointment and the person at your door is not known, you should not let them in. These people prey on our good nature and trust and their aim is to steal from us. Please do not give them the opportunity."

The description given to the police is that of a white male, in his late 20s early 30s, 6ft tall, medium build, short dark hair, blue eyes and speaks with a local accent. The man was wearing a royal blue tunic and trousers. He told the householder that he was checking for red dye in her water supply and when left alone he searched the house for valuables, leaving before he could be confronted with £3000 cash.

Why was there £3000 cash in the house?

 

Because it doesnt matter how many times you tell some folk not to leave their life savings in the house or to be on guard for these types of bogus callers it is still happening far too often. The scum that do this know that the elderly will not change their habits and prey on this.
What annoys me the most is that if this cowardly **** is caught he will only serve a community order at worst.
