defensively we have conceded as many goals as at this stage last season (31). In the first 12 games we had scored 11 with 11 against. In the last 9 games we`ve scored 19 with 20 against. Early season we seemed to have tightened up defensively but whilst we have become more free scoring in recent weeks the floodgates seemed to have been left ajar. Whilst we are giving as good as we get on the scoring front one of the defence or offense has to improve and for me it has to be defense and back to a few clean sheets.
Take away the last 2 games though and it's 12 conceded in the last 17. But as Keith often says "clean sheets are key".
I took the 9 games from the Cardiff game because that is when the confidence of the defence was rocked IMO.
And we've won 5 out of the last 7 so it seems to be working... I'd much rather see a few goals and be winning on a more frequent basis.
Not trying to decry our performances or the entertainment value because that is high at the moment yet KHiller identified at the beginning of the season that we needed to tighten the defensive side of our game and it looked like we had done that but as we have become more attack minded and produced more goals we are also letting them in at roughly the same rate. Maybe Keeganesque is the way to go who knows, it does appeal to supporters, but I dont think Keith as a former defender will want to go down that route.
When the central midfield pairing was Perkins and drink water we looked a more solid team compared to recent games.
Yeah our excellent attacking play and our wins are both hiding that our defence just isn't that good lately. They haven't become bad overnight and will discover their form, but we could do with at least one change next saturday to give them a boot up the backside that nobody has a safe position in the side.
