?Mattis looked like a league 1 player at best didn't get in the game.... Eckersley was impressive marked players tightly and got forward a few times and put in a few decent balls
Here we are again. See my post above regarding positive and negative. The question asked for opinions on their first game. Mine is, Mattis was well of the pace and barely got a kick early on, when he did he struggled to find a red shirt every time. I thought he was shocking. Eckersley appeared to grow in confidence through the game, but I was disappointed with his distribution. The next game might be totally different, it doesn't mean Mattis is written off, it means I though he was crap yesterday. As were many others.
He wasnt the worst player yesterday Both Reids, Nardiello and Hayes were worse.

The partnership between Mattis and Howard needs some work.

RE: Here we are again. I thought Willie Eckerslike started poorly - was miles off his man to allow the early cross that ended with Colgan pulling off a blinding save - but improved as the game went on. Had an excellent second half.
Mattis - yes, early days, let's give him a chance. No more to be said!
Star of the show for me though was Rob Atkinson. Is his emergence the reason we haven't taken on a centre back?

For me Mattis was ineffective But I think that was more likely to be down to having just one training session with his new team mates rather than lack of ability . Eckersley started off slowly but improved as the game progressed . Neither player was helped , though , by their colleague's shambolic display , nor by yet another bizarre team selection by Simon Davey . Sam Togwell wide right ?? Good grief .
Im glad he's been given a chance i wonder if some of our other youngsters might be able to make such a impact.
Still think we need one myself I agree that Atkinson has looked fairly assured at the back, and would be even better if he had a goalie behind him that could be relied upon to help him out a bit (and by that I mean organising and commanding his area). However, he is a young lad and we should be prepared for a dip in form at some point as other managers do their homework on him, so I still consider the need for a CH to be a huge priority. If the budget is there for just one experienced signing on higher wages, I'd go for that position.
RE: For me Mattis was ineffective Agree on the whole there, but I still expect professional footballers to be able to make a 10 yard pass and control a football when in space, regardless of how long he's been training with the side. Mattis failed to do this quite consistently yesterday, but then plenty of others suffered the same problems - and like you say the manager needs to take responsibility for that rather than praising them for "working their socks off"
I agree that Eckersley was quite good but he has had a full weeks training with the first team, Mattis only had one day at the most so can u really expect him shine straight away??? Lets see what happens nxt week then comment!
thought Mattis did ok in parts yesterday...definitely not the worse player on display! Eckersley looks solid-doesnt have much pace but his strength and posistional play makes up for that. Also thought Colgan had a better game too-mad 2 fantastic saves at 0-0. and i think Paul Reid had a better game, book distribution is still awful from him... another thing, with regards to Colgans lack of command in the area, did anyone else see Paul reid give him the gesture with his hands before kick off as if to say to him 'Talk'?
We just didnt look like or play like a TEAM, need to get to know how each other plays i know but am feeling less than confident that we will stay up to day, for the first time this season, yesterday was appauling, no passion, no belief
He isnt very good When all he gets is hanging 60 yard balls he has to fight for with a centre half - thats for certain He isnt cut out as the lone striker - hopefully Constantine will make a big difference to Nardiellos effectiveness. He did have a poor game though and he really should pass sometimes
