with Colchesters lack of sportsmanship over the throw in late on.I don't know if theres a specific rule about this but on a least two occasions Barnsley gave the ball back to Colchester after their players had recieved treatment. It could have cost us and all hell would have broke loose.

I think it's more of a gentleman's agreement tbf, just shows how desperate they were to get something from the game. What's that saying, cheats never prosper:pff

There is no specific Law on this as you say.
It is simply Sportsmanship and its a fairly recent development.I think it started in one of the World Cups?

The referee could have told their No.2 to give us the ball back and then if they didn't do it he could have given a foul throw and let us have the ball back.

Iv'e never liked the idea of players putting the ball out of play anyway. The referee is close enough to see if a player needs treatment or not. In 99% of cases the player just needs a minute to recover.

Head injuries of course are a different matter but everyone can usually see when there has been a clash of heads. A seriously injured player doesn't roll about on the floor.

I think some players stay down in the hope that the ball is put out of play just to break up the momentum of the game, particularly if they are under pressure.

lesson to be learned from that

punt the ball out as far down pitch as possible. NOT on the edge of your own area against a fellow promotion team desperate to get an equaliser in the last 2 minutes.

RE: lesson to be learned from that

Is it time for teams to stop putting the ball out of play for an injury and let the referee stop play if he thinks a player needs treatment?</p>

I was disgusted with them for what they did.

I seem to remeber a game between Sheff Utd and Arsenal in the cup, where a Sheff Utd player went down injured, and a Sheff Utd player kicked the ball out for his teammate to get treatment. Arsenal took the throw, and didnt give it back to Sheff Utd. Result = a cross comes into the box, Arsenal score. If memory serves me right the FA made them play a re-match.

    No there isn't a rule

And whilst it wasn't sporting as we had given the ball back to them a couple of times I do think it's about time teams stopped doing it.

We put the ball out for our own player to get treatment - in that scenario I think the opposition should be under no obligation to give the ball back....only if you put the ball out for their player to get treatment.

Also on the occasions we gave them it back we thought we must have been playing for a 0-0 as instead of rolling it back to their keeper we hoofed it out for a goalkick as far from the goalie as we could (once went right into the stand)

The FA didn't make them play a rematch, it was Arsenal who offered to do it.
