Capital punishment, if put to a public referendum, would be enforced. Most polls regurlarly give it between 60 & 70 per cent support. Why then, do democratically elected MP's fail to canvass our opinions when this matter is put to a vote? They vote for their own beliefs rather than representing the opinions of the people who elected them. Is that democracy? I think not - we only live in a democracy when it suits them.

    That old argument eh?

I dread to think what else the general populace would come up with as well!

As for "most polls give it a 60 or 70% support" - amongst who?

I don't know how many times I've posted this - but it's not purely down to the UK government bringing in capital punishment, there are a few other matters to consider such as EU law, UN law, Amnesty International etc..........it will never happen!

Just checking. Not a democracy then, as obviously the general populace are not capable of making democratic decisions. Dictatorship it is then - just as I thought.

    "Democratically elected dictatorship"

Can't remember who said it, and can't be arsed to check.

That said, rather that than democracy by asking the general public to decide.

    Roundsman, now's your chance

NONE of the main political parties believe in the restoration of capital punishment, so none have it in their manifestos, so they can basically vote how they like when a vote comes up, and don't have to answer to the electorate. I think it's called parliamentary democracy. Now all you need to do is to start up a party that promotes CP, and with "60 or 70%" of the population backing you, and no shortage of candidates, you would sweep into power with the biggest parliamentary majority in history. Then you could really sock it to 'em. Not be long before those murdering b's were screaming (once more) from Hull Hell and Halifax (and a lot more places besides) may the lord deliver us. Could lead to a lot of referendum's mind, as adopting your method would mean that NO policies could be adopted without a majority of the population backing them. Nothing wrong with that mind.
