A big ****ing clock, removable team names and scores on a wooden old fashioned scoreboard, bit of a ****ing lamp shining on it for night matches. Make it look smart in a retro stylee . . . . done.

Save what 120k? It doesn't exist. It would have to be generated as it is down the list of priorities according to Don. This is why Gally is suggesting the supporters take the initiative and remove that particular headache from the club. Which is a great idea but I think we should go for something more modest and low-tec, and really we need two - one at each end.

We don't need a state of the art scoreboard, not really a fan of a great big walloping tv screen showing adverts and the odd goal from previous matches, a la Brighton. Just a crisp, clear one that shows the score and time and avoids Powerpoint Presentation style special effects. Seeing Millwall 0 Watford 0 dissolve slowly across the screen aint necessary!

£120k might not exist, but there might be more mileage in an appeal which gets fans to offer "help in kind" to improve the ground's concourses/ setting up of a social club etc.; than a scoreboard which is not imperitive.

In return for sponsorship / ticket offers, fans could donate time to help carry out the work, utilising the skills that people have, rather than asking the man (woman) in the street to dig deep again.

I'm quite surprised at the reaction to this...

As before we brought it up at the meeting and posted the response, every fan I ever speak to moans (rightly so) at our embarrassing scoreboard.

All of a sudden many people don't see it as important.

Maybe it's the cost that's making folk think it's not worth it?

It was soon as I saw the word "advertising" that it put me straight off.

Supporters having whip rounds to pay for a big telly that will play adverts at them before the match and half time? There is something wrong with that.

I dont watch adverts at home, I'm fecked if I'm watching them at oakwell.

Why do we need to spend £120k? It has already been said we can get one of the LED state of the art ones cheaper. But there is loads of middle ground. At the other end of the scale we could get something that shows score and time only for £3k. Maybe get 2 and hang them opposite each other? At the moment we have nowt.

Re: I'm quite surprised at the reaction to this...

I think the trouble is people have seen the figure 120 grand and think that's the price so it's a waste of money - it will be a lot cheaper than that. From what other posters have said on different threads, 70k to 90k seems a more realistic figure even for something that is absolutely huge with the best possible picture quality.

Rather than settle for a cheaper alternative, it would be good to have something which is better than our rivals anyway, get some of those long narrow ones as well and stick them in between the tiers on the East Stand showing the score and time. For me things like this really add to the ground but obviously I can understand the club wanting to spend any cash they have on players and improve the squad.

but surely using it for advertising would bring more revenue into the club....

I don't see that as a bad thing

Benefits to fans of a new big screen video board:
    1. Fans can see score, time, teamsheet, bookings and substitutions during the game.
    2. Fans can see match highlights packages at half time and after the game.
    3. Fans can watch highlights as soon as they happen. Barnsley score and it's replayed on the big screen.
    4. Exclusive interviews can be broadcast before games and at half time.
    5. Live games from sky sports can be shown before kick-off. Get into oakwell early on a saturday and watch man utd V man city before watching us destroy the dee dars.

    Benefits to the club:
    1. Massive increase in advertising revenue.

    Drawbacks for the fans:
    1. Some people dont want to watch highlights or see adverts. Solution? Don't look a the scoreboard.

    Drawbacks for the club:
    1. High start up cost. Solution? Don't claim that we need the most expensive board in britain. Do we really need one 3 times more expensive than the one at man city? No. Lower your aims and have a perfectly adequate money making large video board for under £50k.

    Conclusion:
The benefits FAR outweigh the drawbacks.
