The male hormone has now joined Viagra as one of the most popular prescriptions for men suffering from the male menopause, with more than 1.75 million prescriptions for testosterone issued in 2002 an increase of 170 per cent in three years.</p>

The hormone is prescribed in the form of patches, gel or injections, and is thought to be the male equivalent to hormone replacement therapy, although little research is available into long `term effects.</p>

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the hormone s use for treating hypogonadism a condition whereby men produce low levels of testosterone but not for any other use.</p>
