We building a new house on a site in Dodworth, and we're having a ground source heat pump installed. The chosen installers are http://www.matrixenergysystems.co.uk/, but I can't recommend them as they've not started the work yet. Another house on the same site is having an air source heat pump which is being installed by http://www.energyjump.co.uk/. One point to note with ground source heat pumps is that most average sized gardens are too small for the normal heat collector pipes. Some companies install something called a "slinky" pipe, which claims to be more efficient in extracting heat. However, since it is fairly shallow in the ground it can cause the ground to freeze over when the heating is working hard. The alternative is a deep (100m) bore hole, which we're having. Another point is that the system is hugely expensive when installed, but there's a government incentive. Our system should (in theory) be free after about 7 years. PS: I've just read your post again and I've realised you may mean "underfloor heating" rather than "ground source" heating. If so, I believe most competent plumbers will be able to install this. We're having this too, but as yet I don't know the name of the company installing it. I can find out, but as before it's not installed yet so I can't recommend them.
Thanks mate. No I do mean ground source! I think we should just about have enough space to do it. I understand rule of thumb is X 2 garden to size of house. I have a quote and it works out that it will have paid itself off after 7 years with the RHI although the initial outlay is a lot at 30k but it makes more sense than oil, I have looked at air source but the RHI is a third and the installation is only 3k less. We are having underfloor in addition on both floors. We are doing a self build cheers I will have a look at those sites
Maybe you need to get another quote or two. I'm not sure how big your house/plot is but our house is about 180m2 and our quote is £18k. Summat doesn't quite add up there..... Also, the rule of thumb you mention doesn't seem to apply to us. Our plot is about 4 times the area of the house and we have still been told it's not big enough. Maybe your installer is intending to use the slinky pipes? PM on way...
