Yes, but since I moved away in 94, I've only seen the station in its current guise a few times.

Anyone remember when the new one was built?

I'm thinking maybe 92-93? Round about the same time as the alhambra shopping place?

Sounds about right, seem to remember parts of it being built just before leaving and most if not all being done when I visited a mate at easter in 95.

    Honestly can't remember mate

Could have been earlier - sure it was being built while I was still at college - left in 92! Remember how grubby the old one was though and how crap those trains were in the picture! :D

it's strange how photographs of this era simply don't exist

I was surprised to find such a photo on flickr.

Suppose the 80s to early 90s was a bit of a bad time in Barnsley's history and people simply weren't taking photos!

Wasn't the best of times for Barnsley

Was pretty miserable in the mid 80's with the strike being on

Yeah to be honest I can't remember the new one being built but can remember being in the old one

Yes it was grubby, similar to Kirkgate station now except it was staffed.

I'm just in a nostalgic mood I suppose, bit frustrated by the fact that there seems to be a big lack of photographs taken in this era.

Christ I can remember Kirkgate. Used to catch the train form Elsecar to Kirkgate for school. Always made me wonder what the place must have been like in its prime.

Had to spend 2 hours in the snow at Kirkgate

It was the coldest I've ever been in my life. It took 8 hours to get from Liverpool to barnsley because of the snow - it then took 1 hour to drive from Barnsley to the top of Carlton Road - :'(

Still looked better then than Wakefield does now. Looks like a scene from one of those 'post apocalypse' films whenever I go thorough it.

How did you use to get to away matches

I remeber the good old special trains they put on for our away matches. Great fun, always a laugh meeting the other fans on their trains in Sheffield :)

    Good memories!
