Does Barnsley have a racist reputation?

I was talking to a young lad at work today about nights out. I asked if had ever been to Barnsley. He said no he hadn't. He said that he had been told there were lots of racists.
Is this impression widespread? I never realised we had a reputation and I was quite shocked. I told him not to be daft.

As regards immigration, I would have though it had everything to do with it. I fully take your point however about Barnsley - it's no more or less racist than anywhere else, but may be perceived as being so, given its relatively small ethnic population.

 

I would say YES i think its due to many years of lack of diversity in the town

but there are millions of British people who are 2nd and third generation British. Immigration is a seperate issue to racism.

I'm not sure about racist or not but I do think we have a reputation for being insular. "A small town with a small town mentality" is how one friend born & raised outside of Barnsley described the place. I think xenophobic would be a better description of the majority of the towns inhabitants.

(Y) Got to agree with Another Bubble - 100%. Quite a few mates who are not from barnsley have the same opinion.

I think the racism thing stems from there being a shortage of blacks/Asians within the communities?

 

Do you still have communitys in villagers and estates where everyone still knows everyone due to the fact that people
don't move out.
