I'd think so, they've kicked off with frozen areas of the pitch, what's happened, Ibrahima Sonko has broken a rib when he's fallen on it. Yes we're all dissapointed it's been called off, but at the end of the day it's probably the right decision, and if the club/referee feared for the safety of the players then who can blame them? Does haing undersoil heating guarantee having the game on? From what I'm led to believe, it was -7 degrees at half 9 this morning, an no matter how mild it is now, that's fecking cold.
It was -4 at 07.00 in Wombwell and -3 at 8.00 at the BDGH. Does Oakwell have it's own micro climate. My local pitch and my garden were both soft at 10.00 without any underground heating. A week last Friday the weather forecast said we would have sub zero temperatures for 10 days. The club obviouisly didn't prepare for this. Dont we have covers and a few space heaters to thaw any areas the underground heating can't deal with? Obviously not.
If it's frozen when the ref checks it out then it's frozen... and he made the right decision. I don't think any of us are questioning that. But there are a couple of questions that need answering. It was cold last night. No arguments there. But there was also a very rapid thaw this morning. The frost had pretty much completely gone by 11 o'clock. Grass and earth was muddy, not solid. I know, I went for a walk at 12 and my boots were covered in it. If the majority of Barnsley had thawed by mid-morning then the first question that needs asking is how efficient is the under-soil heating we have? The rest of Barnsley thaws on its own but Oakwell doesn't even with the help of under-soil heating? Does it therefore need servicing? Was it switched on? Was it switched on for long enough? Had it been switched on all week to prevent an accumulative effect from all the cold nights? Was it working properly? Also, why were we not warned that there was a chance the match could be off? There was nothing coming out of Oakwell until not long before the pitch inspection was due. Most of us didn't even know there was going to be a pitch inspection until we heard of the postponement. It's not bad for me, I only live a mile away, but I'm sure the majority of Birmingham fans were well on there way here before they heard that there was even a possibility the match could be off. It wasn't handled well and it makes us look amateurish. I don't know about you but I don't want that for my club.
