One impression I have of the good folk of Barnsley is that their heritage has produced in them a number of admirable characteristics. Of these characteristics the most striking is their ability to cope with adversity, indeed for many Barnsley-ites there is a feeling of unease when things are going well. My thesis this fine Monday morning is that this discomfort with success is reflected in the attitude of supporters to BFC. Paradoxically the average BFC supporter is 'happiest' when the team is struggling. When the team is doing well there is an anxiety that it wont last, that just around the corner are impending problems. The crucial question is do the players and BFC in general reflect this 'fear of success' syndrome displayed by the supporters? I think the F.A. Cup run of last season illustrates my point. In general most supporters were happy to have got to the Semi-final and to Wembley and there were few grumbles about us not making the final. In reality we had as good a chance as Cardiff to get there but we didn't want it becaue we were apprehensive about success and unable to handle the prospect of success.
"Paradoxically the average BFC supporter is 'happiest' when the team is struggling"
Ooh I can name a few of them alright. One of em has a Monkey's Heed.

I dont think its right to say Barnsley Fans are more happier when we are struggling, in the last 10 years, aside from 2005, we generally have been struggling. I think the underlying problem is our season in the Premier League. Some fans wont believe the club is succesful unless we get promoted again. Expectations were lower before the premier league flirtation consequently there was less disgruntlement, also the internet gives a perception that the fans are unhappy with the club and its progress. Lets not lose sight of the fact that this messgae board represents a small percentage of fans who attend matches.
a very very small % actually............... and anyone using this board as a snapshot of views is taking a statistically very biased sample indeed
I think what fans want is attractive, flowing football with a bit progress up the league It's getting the blend of players and style that is the problem for a Barnsley manager. Think Machin and Ritchie as opposites with Wilson as the Optimus Prime, whatever that means.
