Doesn't anyone think it's our defence which needs improving?

I think we definitely need a new left back.

I would say midfield is more of a concern to be honest! Just shows how much we have relied on Drinkwater for the defensive duties in midfield. We need someone else as well to cover injuries, hopefully a full time signing not loan.

I might get shot for this! But I don't think we have had one top quality defender for some time now including sir Bobby. Don't get me wrong we have some steady players at the back who can perform on their day but at the same time fall to bits when they face a bit of class and the Ipswich game among others proves that. It's been the case for a while, not just this season.

If anything I would love to see a strong commanding centre back to come in who can steady the ship when under pressure...........not an easy signing to make I guess with our resources.

Tend to agree. Shackell is the best defender we have had at the club in recent years. I think we have been lacking for a number of years. Before that, probably John Curtis on loan. I think Bobby is up there too though, very good player. Oh and Big Darren, shame his legs had gone, must have been class in his day.

    To be fair to Hill

He's come out today and said he wants five players. I'm assuming there will be a spread.
I'd suggest we need a left back, a creative midfielder and a wide player most urgently. I think we have some degree of cover in other areas.
It seems he has brought in someone for up front to replace Haynes, and he has Drinkwater back. Let's give him time to sort the rest.

New left back definitely required and either a big change in tactics or a new centre back to replace McNulty in my opinion. He's brilliant at defending but an absolute liability whenever he gets the ball because he refuses to clear it, instead opting to fart around with it and try to pass it out of defence. A good tactic but he isn't very good at it.

New left back, new centre back (or new tactics to avoid it), new defensive midfielder (drinkwater), new attacking midfielder (to replace butterfield), new striker (already signed). Job done.

Re mc nulty.... Good player, does not need replacing. Just needs to be more selective. Nothing more. That said, the beauty of this year is everyone comfortable on the ball. Fine line between telling players to just get rid, and to be comfortable on the ball. The good coaches get players to make the right decisions, but everyone makes mistakes. I'd prefer to watch a BFC team comfortable on the ball, making the occasional mistake, than a team of hoofers. I think he's decent.

The problem is I don't think he is very comfortable on the ball or at least hasn't been recently. He seems to panic and struggles to fully control the ball meaning the attackers close him down before he's got his pass away. I agree he's a very good player so I would like to hope that the tactics could just be changed slightly so that he doesnt have to try to pass it so much.

    Is it strength we lack?

A big brute at centre back? Commanding! A young Darren Moore!

    And is Luke Steele

And is Luke Steele's poor command of area, communication and uncertainty a reason for our sometimes defensive collapses?

And I think he is a great keeper, but these are things he needs to improve on

Think he's been caught out a couple of times, that's all. In think he will be ok. The last thing he needs now is to be panicked into getting rid early. He will only be comfortable on the ball if he spends time on the ball. I've seen him play on the ball a few times well enough. I'm not advocating unnecessary faffing about at the back, but I think that our players thrive on confidence, and we should cut them some slack.

Can't agree with you about McNulty, think he has had a good season so far. He has made a couple of mistakes, but so has everybody, particularly members of the defence. I think he looks quite composed on the ball, and haven't noticed him struggling to control the ball.

I see why you bring the McNulty thing up. He does have 'moments', but so do the best defenders from time to time.
And I will forgive the odd mistake - if learnt from, because you forget the times he has brought it out of the back well, or played a great ball into Gray/Davies.
Id concentrate on a left-back, and another midfielder

Remeber Jim McNulty is a Left Back, playing out of position!

We are fortunate he has the ability to be so adaptable and fill in at Center Back.

Only seen him a handful of games, but looks very capable to me.

He has played LB for us though, and he looks a better CB.

McShane? Quality centre back, would love to see him back down at Oakwell.
